DADGAD - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On the band's eponymous first album, he used this guitar tuning to perform Black Mountain Side, a piece which was strongly influenced by Bert Jansch's earlier arrangement of a traditional Irish song called Blackwater Side (though Jansch actually used a simpler 'drop D' tuning).
Page later revisited the DADGAD tuning for the song Kashmir, which appeared on the band's sixth album Physical Graffiti.
Graham employed the tuning to great effect in his treatments of celtic music, but also the folk music of India and Morocco.

The guitar is tuned to open G tuning (D G D G B D).
The first, second, third and fourth strings of the guitar in open G tuning are tuned the same as the first, second, third, and fourth strings of the banjo in G tuning.
Because the open tuning is so user-friendly, it is much easier to locate and harmonize melodies.

A recent arrival in the acoustic guitar group is the acoustic bass guitar, similar in tuning to the electric bass.
There are also tenor guitars, baritone guitars tuned ADGCEA (or GDGCDG, GDGCEA, GCGCEG,...) a fifth lower than a normal guitar, treble guitars tuned a fourth higher than a standard (prime) guitar, and contrabass guitars, which are tuned one octave lower than prime guitars.
There are several subcategories within the acoustic guitar group: classical and flamenco guitars, both of which use nylon and composite strings, and steel string guitars, which includes the flat top, or "folk" guitar, the closely related twelve string guitar, and the arch top guitar.

When we use Drop D tuning, the E string becomes a D. This means that the top 3 strings on your guitar become D-A-D. To form a Drop D chord, simply move your finger on the 6th string up 2 frets (a whole step), barring the top 3 strings on your guitar.
Now that you know how to form a Drop D chord, its time to play some songs using Drop D. Here is a list of just a few songs that use Drop D tuning and chords.

Of course, I've used drop D for a few songs I've written, but the songs are mostly varied bastardizations of chords that I doubt have actual names.

I agree with Reese - it has revolutionized the metal music scene;however, tuning to Drop D doesn't make you a sissy.

Technique - Drop D Tuning and Power Chords
To create Drop D tuning on the guitar, you simply lower the pitch of the 6th string down one step to D. A simple way to do this is to pick the open 4th string, an open D note, and tune the 6th string to the sound of the ringing 4th string.
Tuning the sixth string down to D gives your a guitar a deeper, or heavier, sound when you use the 6th string in a chord.
The 6th string D note will be one octave lower than the 4th string D note, but you will still be able to hear when they are in tune as they will both be D notes.

Drop D tuning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Drop D tuning is perhaps most widely-used by heavy metal or rock musicians, though it has also been used in many other types of music, including blues, country, and folk.
Drop D tuning, also known as dropped D or drop-D, is a guitar tuning style in which the lowest (sixth) string is tuned ("dropped") to D rather than E as in standard tuning.
Chords in drop-D tuning are formed as they are in standard tuning, with the exception of the sixth string, which is either omitted or fretted two semitones higher.
