Richard D. James Album - definition of Richard D. James Album in Encyclopedia
The Richard D. James Album is an IDM album by Aphex Twin Released in 1996, it is one of his most experimental and recognised works and is often considered a breakthrough in the up-and-coming drill n' Bass genre.
Richard D. James may have released the album as a form of tribute (Richard James' memorial is displayed in the booklet, which led to some confusion among his fans).
The album consists of songs performed in a style that mirrors popular Electronica styles of the time, including IDM, Breakbeat, and Drum and Bass.

Squarepusher - Go Plastic - Stylus Magazine
Citing that he had taken drum 'n' bass as fast and as crazy as it could gone, Jenkinson released the album "Music is Rotted One Note," an avant-jazz record that took much more from Lamonte Young and Miles Davis than it took from either Goldie or Aphex Twin.
Both "Metteng Excuske V1-2" and "Tommib" offer up short melodic nuggets echoing a bit of Boards of Canada and the last track, "Plaistow Flex Out," is a trip hop influenced number which serves as a good come down track from the hyperspeed breakbeats on most of the tracks.
The album starts off with "My Red Hot Car." I was almost nervous when the next track rolled around in my CD player, but I was then more than surprised to hear a straight up drill 'n' bass workout that sounded much like his work on Big Loada.

REVIEW: Aphex Twin - "Classics" & "Drukqs"
From the drill n' bass of 54 Cymru Beats, plain Aphex Style techno of Bbydhyonchord, the ambience of Gwely Mernans and Btoum-Roumada and the trip hop beats of Orban Eq Trx4 and Taking Control, this double album is aimed at a wide variety of musical tastes.
Containing such songs as: Digeridoo, Digeridoo (live), Isopropanol, Analogue Bubblebath 1, Phloam, Tamphlex (Hedphuq mix) and two early remixes of We Have Arrived, this CD is sure to have you dancing and bobbing your head to the beats for hours on end.
Compared to other Aphex Twin albums, this one is hardcore.

Clapan: 21st Century Lullaby - PopMatters Music Review
Drill 'n bass beats are all over it, backing the kinds of quivering, jittery synth sounds James had once made a name perfecting.
Clapan doesn't break any new ground, and he's certainly not a replacement for the genre giants, but 21st Century Lullaby is mostly a very listenable piece of drill 'n' bass.
I mention this because Richard D. James, the album, is all over Clapan's 21st Century Lullaby, which comes off as something of a slightly more palatable version of said album.

 The Yale Herald - March 26, 2004 - squarepusher - ultravisitor
quarepusher records are always a bit madden-ing. Each has a few songs in which Tom Jenkinson perfects his unique juxtaposition of jazz, drill 'n bass, and IDM songs in which gorgeous melodies and impossibly fast percussion fuse into something hypnotic, kinetic, and profoundly emotional.
But for every song in which he channels the gods of electronic music, there's an uninspired exercise in drum programming or a heavy-handed ambient piece.
One day Jenkinson will stun us with the landmark album that his finest songs show he can produce.
