Dream pop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Today, "dream pop" is still a term used to describe a number of popular bands, such as:
Britpop - College rock - Dream pop - Gothic rock - Grunge - Indie - Madchester - Noise pop - Paisley Underground - Shoegazing - Twee pop

FIQL.com: Column: The Randomplay Archivist: Dream Pop
Dream Pop is another one of those genres that doesn’t derive from a particular musical discipline, such as country-rock, blues-rock, jazz-rock, etc. Nor does it describe a new musical hybrid, in the sense of funk, or heavy metal.
Apartment Life was one of the standout albums of 1997, a mix of ethereal sonic texture and 60’s style pop, without sacrificing a distinctly modern edge.
The band released nine albums during a 1982-1996 recording career; they’re all pretty-good to pretty-great, and represent one aspect of dream pop better than anyone else.

The album took the dream pop concept and pushed it into new sonic territory, blending dreamy vocals, funk-inspired bass lines and the ever-present droning guitars.
Blending pop melodies and with a wash of feedback and noise, the album was a stunning clash of the Beach Boys and the Velvet Underground and set the tone for the shoe-gazer movement.
Although oft attributed to the early '90s, the true beginnings of the dream pop sound were in 1985, when the Jesus and Mary Chain released Psychocandy.

With this album, bliss addicts will be pleased to discover one of last year's best dream pop releases, but the best thing about Leave Me Out Of This is that it marks the North American debut of what promises to a very, very good band.
Instead of going for fuzzy, blocky soundscapes and pretty, spaced-out melodies, Fiel Garvie's mission is to purvey pure pop - the eleven songs on this album don't stray far from the basic formula (dreamy, female-led indie pop), but instead distill it to perfection.
