Don's distinctive E6 tuning and style, combined with Hank Williams' voice, is one of the most widely recognized sounds in 20th Century popular music.
Don is a member of the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame, and at age 72, is still working the road with Jett Williams and recording in Nashville.
Don joined Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboys at age 18, and started recording with Hank in 1950.

Old Time Country at the Liberty
But, the songs included in the Liberty show are a reminder that the great country recording artists from the 1940s and 1950s were also able to convey in their music an authentic feeling with roots in the folk music that is part of their musical heritage.
The special guest musician for the evening was Don Helms, who played steel guitar on every Hank Williams record from 1950 until Hank's death in 1953 and who made many other hit records with other top country artists.
Then Cajun and country music legend Vin Bruce appeared on stage to sing "Here Is the Bottle," joining Don Helms on stage for the first time since they recorded that song together in a studio for Columbia Records in 1954.

The native son was inducted into the Steel Guitar Players Hall of Fame in 1984 after being recognized for his unique style of guitar rhythms played by some of the legends in country music.
After Williams’ death, Helms steel guitar twangs resounded in songs by Patsy Cline and other famous celebrities through the years.

 Stories
Don Helms, steel guitarist in Williams’ Drifting Cowboys band, rode with a friend to the Oakmont Cemetery while the haunting ballad, “Ramblin’ Man,” played in the car.
Helms nourished their souls with the classics -- “Hey Good Lookin’,” “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “Wedding Bells.” Musician/fans were quick to take the stage and back Helms.
In 2002 Helms performed with the Nashville Symphony, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

I haven't heard the AFRS shows, but if you have a typical greatest hits album of Hank Williams, Sn, you'll hear the steel work of Don Helms (songs like Your Cheatin' Heart and I Can't Help It if I'm Still in Love With You).
The later GOO live recordings were originally transcribed for AFRS, the 1950 recordings have Jerry Byrd playing ("You're Gonna Change", "They'll Never Take Her Love From Me", "I Just Don't Like This Kind Of Living"), all the recordings from 1951/1952 (incl.
Don Helms (all remaining records starting January 9, 1950) songs include "Cold, Cold Heart", "Hey Good Looking", "I Can't Help It"

HELMS STOMPS FOR JONES AND ``SOUL OF AMERICA''
Helms responded to his critics by borrowing a phrase from a Morganton man named Lum Garrison, a friend of the late North Carolina Sen. Sam Ervin.
Jones, speaking before Helms, accused Lancaster of taking the campaign ``down in the gutter'' with negative advertising that Jones claimed ``distorts'' his record in the North Carolina General Assembly.
Helms also attacked Democrats who he claimed ``have forgotten why they were sent to Washington'' and blamed what he called ``the liberal news media'' for not reporting the truth on Democratic voting records.

 Helms for Hayes
After Concord Mayor George Liles presented Helms with a key to the city, the state’s senior senator got right on the stump for Hayes, lauding the freshman congressman’s faith and his “remarkable” first-term record.
After the National Anthem, Vinroot, who asked Hayes to introduce him Saturday at the state GOP convention in Greensboro, told the crowd that Hayes is one of a handful of first-term Republicans targeted by the Democratic Party.
Helms kept his remarks brief, but said that his hometown newspaper “pointed out that I don’t make many appearances like this, and I don’t.” Helms, who had to be helped to the podium, has been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, a nerve disease that numbs his feet and makes it difficult for him to walk.
