Doc has said that his earliest memories of music reach back to his days as a young child being held in his mother's arms at the Mt. Patron Church and listening to the harmony and shape-note singing.
One problem Doc had when Rinzler first came to record him at Tom Ashley's was that he did not own an acoustic guitar.
The G-50 that Doc was given in 1968, nicknamed "Ole Hoss," was the one that Doc played on the Will The Circle Be Unbroken album.

Doc Watson has recorded dozens of albums for many labels over the decades, but MEMORIES is one of my favorites.
The album closes with what Doc says "is one of the most beautiful tunes I have ever heard." The song, "Thoughts of Never," was written by Merle who performs this instrumental on classical guitar with only Chuck Cochran accompanying him on piano.
If you don't know Doc Watson, you should remedy that situation as soon as possible, and this album is the perfect one to start your collection with.

In 1974 a guitar was made for Doc by J.W. Gallagher which incorporated some particular features Doc wanted.
Over the years a number of guitars have been made for the Watson's -- not only for Doc and Merle, but also for Merle's son Richard.
