Dixieland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dukes of Dixieland, the Assunto family band of New Orleans.
Dixieland developed in New Orleans, Louisiana at the start of the 20th century, and spread to Chicago, Illinois and New York City, New York by New Orleans bands in the 1910s, and was, for a period, quite popular among the general public.
According to jazz writer Gary Giddins, the term Dixieland was widely understood in the early 20th century as a code for "black music." Frequent references to Dixieland were made in the lyrics of popular songs of this era, often written by songwriters of both races who had never been south of New Jersey.

Original Dixieland Jazz Band - definition of Original Dixieland Jazz Band in Encyclopedia
The Original Dixieland Jass Band are often known by their initials, the O.D.J.B. The band consisted of 5 white musicians who had previously been playing in the Papa Jack Laine bands, a diverse and racially integrated collection of musicians who played for parades, dances, and advertising in New Orleans.
Original Dixieland Jass Band (after mid-1917 spelling changed to Jazz) was a New Orleans band which, in 1917, was the first ever to make a jazz recording.
Back in New Orleans, LaRocca licensed bandleader Phil Zito to use the ODJB name for many years.

 Jazz music, Dixieland
Dixieland is an umbrella to indicate musical styles of the earliest New Orleans and Chicago jazz musicians, recorded from 1917 to 1923, as well as its developments and revivals, beginning during the late 1930s.
The tempos were generally less relaxed than New Orleans Dixieland, and the music seemed more aggressively performed.
Aficionados make distinctions between various streams of traditional New Orleans jazz, the earliest Chicago jazz, and the assorted variations that are performed by revivalist bands.

St. James Encyclopedia of Pop Culture: Dixieland
The success of the dixieland style in the mid-1940s ignited the release of a flurry of hasty and uninspired imitations of the music.
The music is generally thought of as a collective improvisation during the choruses, with individual solos that include riffing by the horns, and a two-to four-bar call and response tag game between the drummer and the full group at the closing of the song.
While almost any song can be played in the dixieland style, the music is most often associated with about forty songs, including "That's a Plenty" and "Tin Roof Blues." Most dixieland bands are comprised of a trumpet or cornet, a harmonizing trombone&; a clarinet&; and a piano&; string bass, or tuba.

 Jazz All About Jazz
What we do know is that this type of music grew from a number of sources: songs and dances of Negro slaves, minstrel show music, American folk music, religious music, ragtime piano, the blues and also marching brass bands.
The minstrel show music, ragtime piano and the marching brass bands had the most influence on the first Dixieland bands of this period.
In all actuality, it was Dixieland jazz or traditional New Orleans jazz they were forming with the second element that being the blues.

 Dixieland Jazz Style Summary
These changes were not abrupt, as can be determined by listening and comparing the recordings of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band to the later recordings of King Oliver's Band of this period.
Today tubas perform with banjos and pianos, and synthesized pianos and sounds - but modern Dixieland guitarists are a rare breed in comparison with the number of rock guitarists.
Some of the early Dixieland bands of this period were those of: Buddy Bolden; Jack Laine; Kid Ory; Freddie Keppard; King Oliver; and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band.

The Historical Evolution of the Jazz Trombone: Part One
This new music, often labeled as Dixieland, was the first example of what is generally classified as "jazz." Dixieland jazz was performed by smaller groups, usually for dancing purposes.
Even though he had founded a new trend in jazz trombone, and had a great influence on many trombonists in the 1920s, the listening public had begun to listen to a new style in jazz known as Swing.
These are all musical devices that were commonly used by trombonists of the Dixieland era.

A "Dixieland" and "Jazz" Overview, Part 1 of 4
If we define 'Jazz' as the free improvisation on a melody, then "Dixieland Jazz" is that type of improvisation which we today associate with bands originally playing in America's 'Southland'.
That is to say, it is ensemble playing, with each instrumentalist getting adequate 'space' to display' his musical ideas on music written by composers of virtually every nation in the world.

PBS - JAZZ A Film By Ken Burns: Selected Artist Biography - Original Dixieland Jazz Band
The most passionate advocate of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band's importance to jazz history was LaRocca himself, who never ceased claiming that his band had played a vital role in the "invention" of jazz in New Orleans during the early years of the 20th century.
No member of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band was particularly talented as an improviser, and the group's phrasing was rhythmically stilted; but even so, its collective vigor had an infectious spirit.
The group presented a new sound rather than a new music; this sound, and the rhythms in which it was couched, appealed to young dancers, who were eager to break away from the rigidly formal dance steps of the era.

The first jazz record was Victor 18255, which featured "Dixieland Jass Band One-Step" (on the "A" side-- "Composed and played by Original Dixieland 'Jass' Band") backed by "Livery Stable Blues." It is worth noting that "one-step" is in one title, and the other is characterized on the label as a fox trot.
From the 1930s onwards, all recorded versions of "Dixieland Jazz Band One- Step," which was widely recorded by traditional jazz bands, were credited to LaRocca himself despite LaRocca never claiming sole authorship in his 1929 letters.
The inclusion on the disc's A side ("Dixieland Jass Band One-Step") of a strain from Joe Jordan's 1909 "That Teasin' Rag" led to claims of copyright infringement.
