Diatonic scale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music theory, a diatonic scale (from the Greek diatonikos, "to stretch out") is a seven-note musical scale comprising five whole-tone and two half-tone steps, in which the half tones are maximally separated.
There is even circumstantial evidence that a flute used by neanderthals 32,000 years ago was based on a diatonic scale[1], as was a song recorded on a clay tablet in ancient Syria, 3,400 years ago.

Diatonic harmony is an important tool in music composition and performance.
Students will be given a diatonic melody and will be asked to compose a harmony pert (3 voice min.) and then perform their composition.

Accordion Articles - The accordion is rooted in many cultures
Diatonic is a musical concept that means 'only notes from some scale'.
The Diatonic Scales are those of the major and minor keys, and diatonic passages, intervals, chords, and harmonies are those made up of the notes of the key prevailing at the moment.
The prevailing type of bandoneon (well known for tango music) may be considered a Single action / Chromatic accordion.

Mahler Music Accordion / Diatonic Accordions
While the diatonic bass system is adequate for much folk music, there are occasions when the limitations of the system are apparent.
They also tune the middle sets of reeds in unison, without the tremolo found in most other accordions.

F Diatonic Tuning for 12 String Pedal Steel
I especially enjoy the sound of Bach's music when it is played in meantone on the F diatonic pedal steel.
Using this tuning, I'm never more than one fret away from a full diatonic scale in any key signature at any fret.
-Ab -Eb I use the a fairly standard E9th tuning for most country, swing, blues and rock, but the F Diatonic is my choice whenever I have to read music.

 ON SCALES, CHORDS, AND PROGRESSIONS
Despite this, the diatonic cycle of fourths is obviously a useful tool to analyze chord progressions in music not only for the purpose of playing good sounding lines over chord progressions, but for composing music and reharmonizing existing music as well.
This movement from a diatonic scale to a melodic minor a half-step above the "dominant" chord (the "dominant" being the "in-between" seventh chord in a 1-4-7, #4-7-3, 3-6-2, 2-5-1 progression or anything having a similar relation of intervals) then back to the diatonic scale may be generally referred to as a Major 2-5-1 progression.
This can be formulated into some true-isms about music in general, and with some study, the diatonic scale can serve as a launching point to get to virtually any type of music, and to aid in selection of the proper choice of notes for improvisation, harmonization and composition.

Reading music and song tab for the chromatic- The chromatic harmonica hole layout is similar (sometimes referred to as "Solo" tuning) to the diatonic hole layout (referred to as "Richter" tuning), but not the same, so song tablature is different.
The chromatic is mostly used for jazz, classical, and pop music- The chromatic harmonica is typically used in jazz, classical, pop, and music where the melodies require more than a 7-note scale (like the one on a standard diatonic).
Reading standard music notation makes more sense and is easier on the chromatic harmonica than on the diatonic.

 DiaTonic < Main < TWiki
On the erhu, it is possible to improvise by knowing (or hearing) the implied chord structure and playing phrases which emphasise these chord tones, and lead the listening ear from one chord to another in a plausible way.
If you learn these fluently, you'll be much closer to sight-reading the chord charts for most "simple" western music.
A typical song has at least two levels of structure.

Tunings - The Fibonacci series as it relates to musical scales, pentatonic, diatonic and microtonal
There is no distinction between large and small intervals to tell us what step of the musical scale we are on -- the same problem we had playing pentatonic music in the five-tone temperament in the previous step of our experiment, or two-tone music in the step before that.
If we put aside the idea of a 12 or 19-tone diatonic scale and regard the 31-tone tuning primarily as a tool to improve the intonation of traditional scales and intervals, then it looks like a sensible idea.
Now we can play all of the music we played in the earlier 2, 5 and 7-tone scales, and we can also play diatonic music using 7-tone scales with full freedom of modulation through 12 keys.

 Pythagorean Tuning - More details
In the authentic modes, the final or note on which a melody concludes is located at the bottom of the octave.
With a generous whole-tone of 204 cents, and a rather narrow diatonic semitone of 90 cents, the Pythagorean scale offers expressive contrasts for Gothic melody and harmony alike.
From another perspective, the syntonic comma also represents a fact of musical geometry noted by Mark Lindley: the expressively narrow and incisive Pythagorean diatonic semitone of 90 cents (256:243) is necessarily associated with wide M3 and M6, and narrow m3 and m6.

BAIN: A Pythagorean Tuning of the Diatonic Scale
If one assumes as Pythagoreans did, that pitches related by a frequency ratio of 2:1 may be considered equivalent, then the process of creating a scale might best be described as filling in the musical space spanned by the octave with smaller basic intervals.
ne way to tune a 7-note diatonic scale is to use only the basic intervals whose frequency ratios are
Today we refer to these intervals as the perfect

 Articles - Diatonic functionality
Pandiatonic music is diatonic music without the use of diatonic functions.
Diatonic functionality for music tuned to equal temperament can be thought of as deriving from equal temperament as a tuning of logical, or abstract, meantone.
German musicians use only upper case note letter and roman numeral abbreviations, while in the US often upper and lower-case are used to designate major and augmented, and minor and diminised, respectively.

Diatonic 7th Chords - Creative Keyboard, July 2003
The concept of diatonic chords is taught in traditional music theory.
It should not serve as the base of your improvisation since patterns and scales can easily sound mechanical.
In jazz, the diatonic concept is very useful when it comes to practicing technique and learning scales and their sound.

[minstrels] The Diatonic Dittymunch -- Jack Prelutsky
The Diatonic Dittymunch plucked music from the air, He swallowed scores of symphonies and still had space to spare.
It's thought-inspiring to see Prelutsky's alliteration, and the way he manipulates music-form titles into a comfortable rhythm is comparable to Tom Lehrer's sorting the names of the chemical elements to the tune of the "Modern Major-General" song from Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance.
While perhaps not as terrifying as the Kraken or Grendel (or even the Jabberwock), to a composer or a musician, the Diatonic Dittymunch would certainly be awful to behold.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Plain Chant
The theory of the plain chant tone system and modes is as yet somewhat obscure.
The older chant contained a good number of these, especially in the more elaborate melodies.
Simultaneously these non-diatonic intervals must have disappeared from the practical rendering, but the transition was so gradual that nobody seems to have been conscious of a change, for no writer alludes to it.

What are the different types of diatonic harmonica?
Hohner used to make at least one version of the Marine Band in this style, as well as some of their Second To None and Up To Date series.
In the late 1800s, a minor tuned version was devised:
The Richter System harmonica is a single reed diatonic, which means that each note on the instruments is sounded by one reed, as opposed to double reed diatonics such as the various octave and tremolo instruments where each note is sounded by a pair of reeds.

Types of accordions and how they work - Diatonic Accordions
First used in Styrian diatonic accordions, these reeds are now found in piano accordions.
The first diatonic accordions were made early in the 1800's.
Diatonics are frequently used by many folk and dance groups, because of their great sound output, simplicity, light weight and low cost.

 Dilettante's Dictionary
diatonic : A musical scale of eight notes spanning one octave, consisting of an ascending pattern of two whole-steps, a half-step, three whole-steps and another half-step.
There are two types of diatonic scale in common use in western music: the diatonic major scale and the diatonic minor scale.
Music which includes notes outside of the diatonic in which the piece is written is said to be chromatic.

Relating Secondary Functions to Diatonic Cousins
Triads having no possible resolution to diatonic chord a P5 below are: major mode IV and minor mode VI.
The major tonic chord in minor mode may function as V/iv, but should not be confused with a Picardy third.
Diatonic triads, other than viio that are inherently diminished, or that have been "made diminished" by applying accidentals to any triad factor (most often the root), function as secondary leading-tones to diatonic triads whose roots lie a m2 higher.
