 Urban Dictionary: deathrock
Originally Deathrock was a term used for certain bands that came out of the Los Angeles and New York Punk scenes in the late 70's and early 80's.
Positive Punk, Deathrock, and Gloom and Doom merged under the "Goth" banner.
These were bands that were morbid, darker, and maybe even esoteric when compared to the more straight forward Punk bands.

 Dark Culture Magazine - ARTICLES
Deathrock, in particular, was the hybrid/love-child of punk and was a more theatrical or outlandish version of the Gothic scene we know today.
From the ashes of the Los Angeles punk scene came forth a young girl and her band.
Some would call it Post Punk, but it came to be known as Deathrock.

Reviews for DeSade - SoundClick Music
Visually, DeSade is an archetype of the modern deathrock band from its fishnet adorned female members to its requisite scary big bearded bald guy to the mohawked punk to the essential normal-looking average Joe who appears to have been kidnapped and held hostage by his far-less-average-looking bandmates.
It is also authentically certified Deathrock, with the punk innards are the biggest influence and the now departed (left, not dead!) singer Sarah Deathriage reminded me partly of Kat Arthur (Legal Weapon) and partly an inferior version of George from Action Pact.
Whether you call it punk, postpunk, deathrock, goth, or grunge, Suicide Lounge is a great slice of gritty, angst-filled dark rock.
