Some of Dave's other influences (besides his early affection for the music of his birthplace) are, "John Bonham and then Ginger Baker from Cream, but what I was really drawn to was bands as a whole and what the drummer's contribution was to the band and what the band's sound was.
As a youngster, Dave not only listened to rock music, he also listened to disco, buying 45 singles and listening to The King Biscuit Flower Hour on the radio.
Dave is back with Slayer after several years of hiatus playing in his aforementioned projects, and the band is currently playing club dates with Hatebreed and Lamb of God.

 Lombardo plays Vivaldi!
Dave is a great drummer, but I'd have to say he is probably the most overrated metal drummer as well.
On this album, former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo journeys to Italian composer Vivaldi's homeland to take part in a seven-song suite that attempts to re-create a performance the composer supposedly gave over 200 years ago.

DJ Spooky vs. Dave Lombardo - Drums of Death - Stylus Magazine
The drums stay in check for the first few tracks, and one begins to wonder why Lombardo is the only guest musician to receive co-credit on the album cover.
Lombardo lays down a pretty straightforward beat, while Miller builds a densely-layered fortress of sounds, a clear tribute to the classic Bomb Squad production on the old PE records.
It speaks, first and foremost, of a time before the age of bland, whiny nu-metal bands, when the fusion of metal and hip-hop was a novel and daring concept.

Lombardo's drumming is one of the things that keeps me interested in the two discs I have (South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss (the latter is one of my favorite albums of all time, as a matter of fact.)) He's also equally incredible in Mike Patton's Fantomas.
I just don't feel anything for atonal thrash, but hey that's me and there's room for all kinds of crappy music - better thrash than Celine.

Drums Of Death - Dj Spooky Vs Dave Lombardo: Silent Uproar
Obviously, this is an odd pair: DJ Spooky, a turntablist veteran who has remixed a score of artists, as well as produced solo material blending jazz and hip-hop, and Dave Lombardo, the drummer for notorious metal band Slayer.
The mix of Lombardo’s fast-paced beat-keeping and Spooky’s sliced beats is definitely interesting, but this album is too uneven to reveal its true potential.
This seems to be an exercise in conjoining opposites, finding the junction between a black turntablist and a white metal drummer with the help of some well-known friends, namely Chuck D. However, just how well it works is questionable.

DJ Spooky vs Dave Lombardo Drums of Death
And then there’s Drums of Death, the new Thirsty Ear collaboration between hip-hop/electronic conceptualist DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid and thrash-metal drummer Dave Lombardo (most famous as the skinsman for Slayer, but also a member of weirdo progressive-metal band Fantomas).
The tracks are, in a sense, the diametrical opposite of nü-metal; Limp Bizkit, for example, uses inept hip-hop beats as a rhythmic base, but Drums of Death’s sound starts with Lombardo’s Rock-with-a-capital-R kit work—expansive, thick tom rolls and razor-sharp cymbals.
Usually, this is the sort of CD that one is eager to hear and forever after reluctant to play.

Drums of Death, DJ Spooky’s collaboration/catfight with Slayer/Fantômas drummer Dave Lombardo, begins on a rather promising note with the stentorian tones of Public Enemy’s Chuck D reworking "Brother’s Gonna Work It Out." Chuck D’s voice is one of this album’s highlights, glancing lightly yet authoritatively off of the wall of noise generated by Lombardo’s drumming.
Lombardo steamrollers Spooky’s trademark subtlety, and Spooky is too polite to steal back the spotlight.

Living Colour guitarist, Vernon Reid, provides the metal segues, which surge with virtuosic energy and technical aplomb, but it's the presence of Public Enemy's Chuck D that lends the album its hip-hop grounding, running through three new interpretations of Public Enemy staples like "Brother's Gonna Work It Out" and "Public Enemy #1."
