Dave Brubeck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1959 the Dave Brubeck Quartet released Time Out, an album their label was enthusiastic about but nonetheless hesitant to release.
Brubeck's mother studied piano in England and intended to become a concert pianist; at home she taught piano for extra money.
Brubeck was not particularly interested in learning by any particular method, but preferred to create his own melodies, and therefore avoided learning to read sheet music.

PBS - JAZZ A Film By Ken Burns: Selected Artist Biography - Dave Brubeck
Brubeck, who considers himself in essence "a composer who plays the piano," has written and, in some instances, recorded several large-scale compositions since the 1960s, including two ballets, a musical, an oratorio, four cantatas, a mass, works for jazz group and orchestra, and many pieces for solo piano.
Brubeck's quartet was immensely popular on college campuses in the 1950s; the album Jazz at Oberlin, recorded in concert at that college in 1953, contains some of Brubeck's (and especially Desmond's) finest improvisations.
In 1941-2, while a music major at the College of the Pacific in Stockton in California, he led a 12-piece band.

Dave Brubeck's defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time.
Dave Brubeck was way way ahead of his time with this album.
Brubeck's classic "Blue Rondo à la Turk" blends jazz with classical form and Turkish folk rhythms, while "Take Five," despite its overexposure, really is a masterpiece; listen to how well Desmond's solo phrasing fits the 5/4 meter, and how much Joe Morello's drum solo bends time without getting lost.

Dave Brubeck, jazz pianist, is probably best known for his 'Time Out' album (1959), featuring one of the few jazz crossover hits, the 5/8 time-signatured "Take Five" (written by Paul Desmond, saxophonist in his then Dave Brubeck Quartet).
On Disc One of this 2004 release from audiophile label Telarc, Brubeck lovingly carresses and reminisces his way, on solo piano, through 14 standards that were popular in the World War II years - 1940-45.
His performance yields both a nostalgic love of, and mastery of, these songs...and this time in his life, and a melancholy sense of loss and the beauty of those days writ large in music.

Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" isn't just a great album; it also gives me fond childhood memories from when I first listened to this recording as a toddler.
The Brubeck quartet’s strength was always in its spontaneous, creative improvisation &; particularly in the ability of Brubeck and Desmond to improvise genuinely tuneful lines on fairly conventional standards.
The other effect of this “time” material was to shift the focus of interest within the quartet’s music to the compositions themselves, and away from their function as vehicles for jazz improvisation.

Dave Brubeck is unlikely ever to rank among the great improvisers or composers of jazz, but throughout his career he has been a tremendous popularizer, managing to present otherwise challenging musical ideas--modernist harmonies, classical structures, and complex time signatures--in forms palatable to a large audience.
Brubeck's and reedman Paul Desmond's solos are excellent throughout.
It was the kind of success that resists analysis, but it undoubtedly involved the contrast presented by Brubeck and Desmond, the pianist openly touching on the pensive, the boisterous, and the bombastic, the saxophonist a self-effacing master of a coolly detached, liquid lyricism.
