 Metallian.com - Darkane
Darkane's sound is of the more unaffected metal variety, but vocal harmonies and even solos have found a place on the new album.
Darkane, which was entering the studio in September of 2003 to record its fourth CD, shot a live video for the song Chaos vs. Order from the band's 2002 album Expanding Senses.
Darkane is not the most prolific metal band out there, but Layers Of Lies confirms the Swedes as one of the few bands for whose albums fans ought to await with impatience.

 Darkane
Darkane in fact remind me of a Swedish Death Metal version of Strapping Young Lad, and that is a compliment given the originality and sincere honesty of that band.
Darkane clearly have something to offer and add to the death metal genre, and I would even hesitate to label this as a death metal release due to the restricting confines of the genre.
One, they have a powerful intensity and aggression, mixed with strong melodies; and two, the vocals are varied, overlapped, and are very similiar to the earliest recordings by Strapping Young Lad's Devin Townsend.

Blistering.com Review: Darkane - Layers of Lies
All this seemed to provoke Darkane to unleash what will end up being their most daunting and elaborate album of their career.
A visceral, heart-racing song, Darkane creates an explosive canvas of technical riffs, blistering drumming by Wildoer and a chorus that can be sung along to.
Probably one of the top 5 best albums thus far in ’05, everything Darkane does on Layers Of Lies is far too advanced and risky for their Ozzfest-bound contemporaries.

Darkane's sound is a pretty sharp departure from the At the Gates-spawned "Gothenburg" sound, which permeated through Sweden (and to a lesser extent, Finland) in the mid-to-late 90s.
You'll understand that Darkane is definitely a band that writes and performs every song with calculating precision.
Considering the amazing level of talent and originality displayed in this, their debut album, it'd be a travesty if they didn't.

Darkane's third album boasts a potent balance of brutality, musicality, and style.
Somehow, this band manages to use melody without sacrificing intensity and to exploit all the extreme elements of death metal and grindcore without eschewing songs.
Furthermore, Darkane's progressive chops never sink the music into schmaltzy neo-classical melodrama like so many of the band's Scandinavian peers.

Though every song had its own character, all the familiar DARKANE ingredients were evident throughout: a futuristic mixture of thrash and death, caustic guitar arrangements, a propensity for strong melodies, and a robust undertow of tight drumming, with Sydow proudly giving an honed and inspired vocal performance.
DARKANE soon entered Dug Out Studios with producer Daniel Bergstrand (Meshuggah, In Flames, Strapping Young Lad) in August/September 1998 to record their mesmerizing full-length debut, Rusted Angel.
After deservedly receiving noteworthy praise throughout the underground in response to their first album – which many critics have hailed as one of the greatest debut albums in recent history – a tour with Soilwork and Naglfar in the Netherlands and Belgium ensued.

The albums opening track "Innocence Gone" is a great track.
Just like most of Sweden's other big bands, they have decided to incorporate the clean singing vocals into a lot of their songs (they can be heard more often than screams actually) and the guitarwork has gotten a bit more choppy as well.
Contrary to the album title, "Expanding Senses" sounds like Darkane's most "conforming to the current trend" album thus far.

Darkane: Layers of Lies - PopMatters Music Review
Sweden's Darkane is a band who appears to be on the right track.
To their credit, Darkane have managed to put together an album that has the ability to appeal to both the older aficionados and the kids, with the band's integrity very much intact.
Firmly rooted in the classic Swedish metal of the early 1990s, Darkane draw from early albums by In Flames, At the Gates, and Dark Tranquillity, shredding away a high energy hybrid of death metal's intricately melodic guitar work and thrash metal's more structured songwriting style.

As I said earlier, Darkane are one of the few bands left that I can still get genuinely excited to hear from Sweden's more melodic side of metal.
There's a lot of technicality in Darkane's sound, while melody is ever present.
The title track is a little more subdued and gets into more of the experimental material from the group, especially in the song's intro.

Following Mackrory's exit, the group recruited Andreas Sydow, who made his debut on the follow-up release Insanity; it was issued in early 2001 by Century Media.
