George Graham Reviews Richard Thompson/Danny Thompson
Danny Thompson weaves together a curious blend of his jazzy acoustic bass, Richard Thompson's famously lugubrious guitar, and the brass bands that were often part of the mines and factories of England in the Industrial Revolution.
With Richard Thompson's considerable lyrical acumen, and Danny Thompson's fascinating musical eclecticism that draws on both his jazz background and his memories of the company brass bands in the factories, the result is one of the best collections of work songs on record in recent years, and a very significant work overall.
Danny Thompson is a ubiquitous acoustic bassist whose career has crossed paths many times with Richard Thompson's.

 Richard Thompson/Fairport Convention
A live album recorded at the Troubador in L.A. Two radically different versions are available: the original 1976 release, and the 1986 CD overhaul, with half of the tracks replaced by alternate versions or entirely new songs.
On a lark, Thompson now went in to the studio to record a sometimes goofy, sometimes serious, and always low-key album with three like-minded, avant garde folk-rockers: John French (drums, vocals; ex-Beefheart band), Fred Frith (bass, vocals), and Henry Kaiser (guitar).
Thompson's first serious effort at a solo album in a decade is a curious let-down, marred by uneven songwriting and failing to back up the sentimental soft-rock gloss of Shoot Out The Lights with enough substantial emotional content.

This is not a party album (not that many of Richard Thompson's albums are).
But be VERY prepared for serious subject matter; although Thompson's audible wry grin and ironic humor ease the pain somewhat, some of the songs (and the instrumental "Children of the Dark", which you must read the liner notes to fully understand) has me crying harder every time I hear it.
As a devoted Richard Thompson fan, this disc was on my buy list from the time I heard about it; but, as someone who lacks even rudimentary knowledge of English history during the industrial revolution, I wasn't overly excited about the subject matter.
