Daniel Lanois Interview - January 2004
Daniel: I record it on a little recorder and I save those little recordings.
Daniel: That song has a lot of melancholy in it but it also has hope in it.
It is interesting to listen to the repetition and hear the differences with the different groups of musicians and the solo performances.

 Daniel Lanois: Belladonna: Pitchfork Review
Lanois is aiming for a kind of ascetic aesthetic, with each song a sort of musical haiku: concise, disciplined, sublime.
Lanois manages to coax some lovely textures and melodies out of the instrument, as on the florid notes of "Desert Rose" and "Carla", but typically it gets lost among the other elements, proving the least compelling element on the album.
Daniel Lanois is primarily a producer, but what he's always wanted to do is perform.

With his brother Robert, Lanois began to record music at home, graduating to a four-track machine in 1970 in a recording studio they built in their laundry room.

The Lanois and Eno collaboration can be found on albums by guitarist Michael Bloom and minimalist piano player Harold Budd -- not Lanois' best-known work but important albums for him nonetheless as these albums show the beginning phases of what would soon become the trademark sound qualities of his production.
When Lanois won a Grammy for U2's The Joshua Tree and then produced Robbie Robertson's first solo album (widely considered the best of all of his solo work) as well as Bob Dylan's Oh Mercy, Lanois was established as the premier producer in the music industry.
Daniel and Bob's reputations grew so much that in 1980 they launched Grant Avenue Studios, a recording facility where many of Canada's top acts have recorded important albums, such as Country legend Ian Tyson and children's artist Raffi.

 Guitar Player - Daniel Lanois
Daniel Lanois is best known for producing some of the most artistically and commercially successful records of the ’80s and ’90s.
On his latest album, Belladonna [Anti], Lanois deviates from the mostly song-oriented approach of his previous solo work, and returns to his sonic roots, creating evocative guitar and pedal steel-based instrumentals.
Beginning with U2’s The Unforgettable Fire in 1984 (co-produced with mentor Brian Eno), Lanois brought his potent blend of unadorned earthiness and heady atmospherics to historic albums by Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, the Neville Brothers, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Luscious Jackson, and Willie Nelson—often also collaborating musically on guitar, pedal steel, and other instruments.

 ANTI- Artist - Daniel Lanois
Following the album's release, Lanois is looking forward to touring following the album's release ("from record stores on up," he says, "I like doing those little shows"), possibly with just himself and a drummer onstage.
From the epic sweep of the opening track, "I Love You," featuring the unmistakable harmonies of Emmylou Harris, to the lovely music-box melody of the closing instrumental "JJ Leaves LA" ("the loneliest thing I ever did," says Lanois), the album represents a lifetime spent absorbing blues, rock, country, and folk song.
The core musicians for "Shine" are master drummer Brian Blade (who's played with the likes of Joshua Redman and Joni Mitchell - "a giant," says Lanois) and Lanois himself, who plays the bulk of the other instruments.

At first blush, Lanois' music is flowery wallpaper, but on repeated listens the colorful textures sink in and evoke a hushed mysticism.
Whereas Eno's purest ambient music has such an organic abstractness the listener stops thinking about what is actually producing the sounds, Lanois favours guitars, which links his music more to established styles.
This is Lanois's most accomplished solo recording in a decade, and in its finest moments it even eclipses For the Beauty of Wynona in terms of sheer goosebump-inducing musical soliloquy.

Daniel Lanois: Shine - PopMatters Music Review
It barely even sounds like hyperbole to say that Lanois is the most important producer since Phil Spector.
Such a description doesn't really go beyond what could've been gleaned from his production jobs, and of course, the success or failure of this or any other record lies in larger part with its songs than its sound.
Bono's track, "Falling at Your Feet," does sound too much like a U2 B-side for its own good, but rather than dragging the album down, it helps illustrate Lanois's singular musical personality, one that has hung around in the background of other people's albums without drawing much attention to itself.

 TrouserPress.com :: Daniel Lanois
Through the intricate delicacy of their varied arrangements, Lanois' songs allude to RandB, pop and folk without actually committing themselves; if that sometimes holds Acadie at a distance, it's a testament to Lanois' mature artistry (or perhaps fussy technique) that his cerebrally emotional music defies easy categorization.
The lesson of these two albums is that Lanois' true gift is for arcane studio manipulation, not unadorned music-making.
When not otherwise occupied making exquisitely detailed and supremely tasteful records with the Neville Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson and U2, Quebec-born producer/guitarist Daniel Lanois has put two dozen of his own compositions on a scintillating pair of albums.

After a short break Lanois came out and joined the band on pedal steel for a run through his recent catalog, particularly the instrumental tracks that comprise his latest disc, "Belladonna." Lanois can be an inspiring performer, especially when paired with a drummer like Brian Blade, with whom he shares an almost telepathic bond.
Bassist Doug McCombs fared best, his dub-wise rhythms well in tune with what Lanois was up to, and when Lanois pared Tortoise down to what he called its "punk members" -- namely Herndon and Dan Bitney -- for a version of the reggae-esque "Frozen" from "Belladonna," the collaboration briefly came to life.
Stressing the importance of mixing it up, Lanois likened the joint outing to the kind of creative give-and-take that has always informed folk music, proudly referring to the collaboration as a kind of gumbo.

Splendid Magazine reviews Daniel Lanois: Belladonna
Bleak, sandblasted album closer "Todos Santos" is scathing in its minimalism, its lugubrious cadence and yowling guitar forms rivaling even the scornful meditations of the Southern Lord massive -- a sound that's at once expansive and claustrophobic, a series of dreams in panoramic minutiae.
Though Lanois and his soldiers traverse all corners of the musical globe here, there's an underlying despondency that ties everything from "Telco"'s mellifluous, static-scratched ruminations to the brassbound "Agave" together under a common purpose.
Beyond his knob-twiddling talents, Lanois is a distinctive performer in his own right -- a master of the pedal-steel guitar, a soundscape virtuoso and a wayward traveler in the vast ambient abyss.
