Curtis Mayfield - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Curtis Mayfield (June 3, 1942 – December 26, 1999) was an American soul, funk and RandB singer, songwriter and guitarist probably best known for his soundtrack to the blaxploitation film Superfly.
Mayfield's lyrics included hard-hitting commentary on the state of affairs in black, urban ghettos at the time, previously unheard of in blaxploitation films.
The commercial and critical peak of his solo career came with his 1972 album Superfly, the soundtrack to the blaxploitation film of the same name, and one of the most influential albums in history.

 Salon People Curtis Mayfield
Mayfield left the Impressions to pursue a solo career in 1970, recording a string of albums which were remarkable for the scope of their musical ambitiousness and social awareness.
Mayfield was one of the most complete musicians in the history of black pop; only Stevie Wonder and Prince rival the aplomb with which he balanced the roles of songwriter, vocalist, instrumentalist, producer and arranger.
In Mayfield's case, this is a pity, because his music -- in particular the music he recorded on that glorious sequence of early-and mid-'70s solo albums -- is his great legacy.

 Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions
Mayfield hit the top of the pop charts with his fourth solo release, this soundtrack to the landmark blaxploitation film; musically it follows in the wake of Shaft, with wah-wah guitar, Latin percussion and hip horns providing a streetwise vibe, softened by occasional strings.
Mayfield is crisp and professional as always, but lacks the focus and passion that made his 1971 live album such a revelation - the band stays far in the background and doesn't vary much on the longer numbers ("Move On Up").
As usual, Mayfield's lyrics are directly social-political, and he creates an eerie mood to go with it on the harrowing "Underground," replete with screams and ominous guitar.

Curtis Mayfield was a pioneer in the music world and this album still sounds brillant today and still has relevance to the times we live in
Mayfield achieves this with an array of lean funk grooves punctuated by brass arrangements, interlocking percussion, wah-wah guitar, and his wispy, soulful tenor. The title track, which closes out the set, is one of Mayfield's signature tunes, and still stands among the most recognisable, and pleasurable, musical emblems of the era.

An album which can be applauded on its merits rather than simply through sentiment, it is of course still a monumental achievement against almost insurmountable odds for Mayfield simply to have completed a new album at that stage of his career.

Mayfield was the total package, and his observations on this album are frighteningly modern-sounding.
Mayfield continued to bless this Earth with his socially-conscious songs and earnest tenor until an accident on a Brooklyn stage paralyzed him in 1990, and after a long decade in which he continued to record, he left us poorer without him at the very end of 1999.
