Crass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crass was an influential English anarchist punk rock band.
Crass released their third album Penis Envy in 1981.
As well as their own material, Crass Records released recordings by other performers, the first of which was the 1980 single "You Can Be You" by Honey Bane, a teenage girl who was staying at Dial House whilst on the run from a children's home.

 TrouserPress.com :: Crass
Crass espouse all the proper causes — anti-war, anti-nuclear, feminism, flushing out hypocrisy in organized religion — with blood-curdling vehemence on their own records and on the numerous singles and albums by likeminded bands they've released (or inspired).
Almost in spite of the oppressive, relentless punk bluster, Crass often wrote anthemic songs (like the ironic "Banned from the Roxy" and "Do They Owe Us a Living?" from Five Thousand), but over the course of this album (all of the studio material was cut in one day!), they blur into white noise.
Lords of English punk's extreme left, the Essex-based Crass didn't just sing about anarchy in the UK — they did something about it.

Guardian Unlimited Arts news John Loder
Crass Records became the label that every aspiring punk band looked to, Southern Studios their destination, and John their engineer of choice.
For every band that made it on to Crass Records, 10 were turned away.
As "the ninth member of the band", John became our recording engineer and financial manager: the music was bad and so was the money, but it was fun.

No Doves Fly Here: The Mob
Punk music had hit its second wave, and bands like Crass and Conflict were making a political statement with music, turning punk into an anarchist movement - for real, fusing political theory into the lyrics of their music and creating the anrcho-punk genre.
Some of the other English post punk bands that shared a similiar vision musically and lyrically with The Mob were the Southern Death Cult, UK Decay, Theatre of Hate, and Flux of Pink Indians, not to forget Rudimentary Peni.
In the beginning their records appeared mainly on All the Madmen Records, their own label, but CRASS Records did release "No Doves Fly Here" 7".

 Dischord About Page 3
Crass were a hugely important British punk band, so we were flattered by his interest in releasing the Minor Threat "Out of Step" 12" in Europe.
Because he was able to press records on credit (instead of C.O.D.), and because it was so much cheaper to do so in Europe, we asked him if he thought he could help distribute the record in the U.S. as well.
His company, Southern Studios in London, had released the Crass records.

At the age of 11, her eponymous first album was released; the record contained covers of several pop songs, including the Beatles' "Fool on the Hill," and boasted artwork from her mother and guitar work from her stepfather.
Not only is the sound of the record slick and professional, but all the songs are well-crafted pop songs.
After the band rejected the initial version recorded with Stephen Street, they re-recorded the album with Mayo Thompson, and the record was finally released in 1987 on the Creation subsidiary Elevation.

 SOUTHERN crass
And although many will remember the Crass sound as being ’unlistenable cacophony’ and their lyrics as ’shock slogans and mindless token tantrums’ (copyright: The Sun), listen to these records now and what you hear may surprise you, as what went on the studio was actually quite revolutionary in more than just the political sense.
Love Songs collects the lyrics and poems of anarchist band Crass; a band which, though largely bypassed by the mainstream music business, sold over a million records from its own staunchly independent label, and inspired a massive underground following from 1977 – 1984.
At the centre of their philosophy were themes of free thought, enthusiasm, creativity, ingenuity, peace, and yes, love – a radical standpoint for a band set within the generally nihilistic context of punk rock.

Up until that age people are never given the chance to think for themselves, and I think if they pick up one of our records and think "Oh I want to identify with this!" and buy a T-shirt or a badge then I don't think that's bad.

The Crass label was responsible for releasing works by nearly 70 other artists, while they themselves issued eight LPs and eight singles, all of which were at odds with the ideals fed to us by our stagnating society.
It annoys me that in the press and TV when an article is done on punk we rarely get mentioned and although we probably didn’t contribute immensely to the rock and roll circus, in a cultural and ideological way we were the most powerful band in the country.

Their legacy lives, however, in the countless hardcore punk bands that emerged in Crass' wake, who found inspiration not only in their lyrics and lifestyle, but also in their striking black-and-white album graphics, which were emulated by countless other releases, albeit without as much style as the fold-out posters designed by Crass' G Sus.

For those of you not in the know, Bjork has been making records since before her Debut CD, since before the Sugarcubes even, infact she's been making records from such an early age that her first release should have been called "The Umbilical Years".
Originally released on Crass Records a little short of twenty years ago, this has been recently re-issued by One Little Indian Records (Bjork's old label) so I guess Steve Ignorant has run out of cash and needs to stock up on black shirts again.
Being on Crass Label you would expect some all out anarcho-punk gubbins a la Zounds, Crass or The Mob but that's where you'd be very wrong, I can just imagine the look on some glued up mohawkers face as he and his friends gathered round the communal stereo to eagerly await the latest Crass release.
