More Cowbell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to former band bassist Joe Bouchard, the cowbell line was performed by his brother Albert after the song was recorded.
About a month after the sketch aired, one of its first tributes was the creation of a website called "The Cowbell Project" [2] which was created to catalogue songs using cowbell (and even songs that would supposedly sound better if cowbell was added).
Walken's lines in the skit were sampled by Dirty Gringos in "Cowbell" which won URB magazine's Best New Tune at the 2003 Winter Music Conference and was featured in the June 2003 issue.

 Boston.com / A&E / TV / More cowbell? Yes, please, we've got a fever.
What makes the skit truly funny, according to Scudder, are three elements: the absurdity of the cowbell being so important to a cheesy rock song (it's heard on the real ''Reaper" track, by the way); Walken's deadpan delivery; and, the fact that the cast keeps cracking up, which viewers find hilarious, or so Scudder theorizes.
The guest host was Christopher Walken, and one of the skits spoofed VH1's ''Behind the Music" by imagining what happened when the 1970s band Blue Oyster Cult went into the studio to cut ''(Don't Fear) The Reaper," its best-known song.
Buck Dharma), one of three original band members currently touring with the band, says bells are still ringing for him and his bandmates, too.

Impacted Wisdom Truth: America Needs More Cowbell
The song has tons of cowbell in it, and the (over) use of cowbell in the song is considered one of the worst record-producing decisions in rock history.
UPDATE3: TaylorHQ writes "In truth, most rock fans are surprised to learn that there actually is a cowbell on "Don't Fear The Reaper." The joke behind the skit is that the song seems like the least likely candidate to ever have a producer insist on adding cowbell to the mix.
In the skit, Walken plays a famous record producer named Bruce Dickenson who was working with the band Blue Oyster Cult during the recording of their hit song “Don’t Fear The Reaper.”

(Dickinson did work on some of the group's later releases.) What's more, the cowbell skit is presented as an episode of VH1's "Behind the Music," a real show that chronicles the lurid rise and fall of real-life bands.
Despite the obvious irritation of the rest of the band, Walken's Dickinson persists.
