The Music Show - 01/03/2003: Andreas Scholl
Andreas Scholl: Counter tenors that have recorded lieder and have recorded later repertoire…well, so far I haven’t done that, but I teach in Basle, a small class there, I have four students, and one of them is a baritone, and I do lots of Schubert songs with him, Winterreise.
It’s not the repertoire that people would expect to be sung by a counter tenor but so far we don’t have the style police that will fine me for saying that in concert; it’s up to the audience to come or not come if I should ever decide to do that in a concert.
I mean someone like Paul Esswood, James Bowman, Michael Chance; those are counter tenors that can sing opera, that sing dramatic music, and they moved away from the ensemble type counter tenor voice to a more soloistic approach, and so the ensemble counter tenor is meant to blend into the sound of a choir.

Male High Voices Recorded in the Forgotten Decades
The counter tenor, otherwise known as the alto, appears to be a vocal family of three, with minor subdivisions.
A lower counter tenor (of rather plummy, almost heavy contralto, tone, judged from his records), he sounds to have had very little upper falsetto.
It also underlines that the average record buyer, almost more thn the classical music lover during this period, was expected to be familiar with the term counter tenor, as denoting a male voice higher than, and different from, the genuine tenor.

The reason for this is that the harmonies sound the tightest and blend the best when the bass, barry and tenor are together with the solo on top.
Every once in a while, the bass or the tenor will have a solo, or parts of a solo, but when they do, the background isn't as strong.
First, a counter-tenor, for those who aren't familiar is a male who can sing very high notes in the ranges that a low to mid female can sing.

NPR: Performance Today -- Live in Studio 4A -- David Daniels & Craig Ogden
In an interview with NPR's Lisa Simeone, Daniels reveals that he wants to defeat the mindset that pigeon-holes countertenors into singing repertoire that they're "suppose to sing." Daniels hopes to redefine the countertenor as simply a voice type, like soprano, alto, tenor, bass, and nothing more.
To do this, Daniels sings repertoire that's not associated with his voice type.

Aeneas's range of d-f' corresponds to Purcell's normal tenor range, but the tenor voice was more of a choral than a solo voice to Purcell, so it is unexpected to find a tenor singing the title role in Purcell's only opera.
Since the late 1970s, scholars have questioned the absolute authority of the Tenbury Manuscript upon which most modern performances are based, and have unearthed different textual and musical sources that challenge the normally accepted voice-type-to-role allocation.
There are no records of stage soloists calling themselves tenors working with Purcell, though some of his higher tenor solos were taken by counter-tenors, and some counter-tenor solos were printed in the tenor clef.

The high life: David Daniels had dreams of becoming a red-blooded tenor until he realised he was more comfortable in a higher register
ONE of the small, slow revolutions in post-war classical music has been the change in our attitude to the counter-tenor.
By the Sixties, however, the counter-tenor was being taken seriously as an expressive instrument - Britten, for one, wrote some marvellous new music for it, and singers such as James Bowman began to cultivate a richer, fuller timbre that proved that it could convey more than just a frisson of other-worldliness or olde-worlde melancholy.

 High and Mighty: Counter-Tenors
A case in point is Jochen Kowalski, a German singer whose series of CD recordings for Capriccio has been capped recently with a performance of Schumann's song cycle, A Poet's Love (Capriccio CD 10 359).
Kowalski trips up when he tries to get a bit too popular, as in another Capriccio release, Plaisir d'amour, in which he sings clichéd salon music (CD 10 324).
Intended for tenor voice, the romantic "Dichterliebe" texts by Heine translate curiously well for higher voice.
