At first listen, Mystery Cornetist’s new half-chorus sounds, dismayingly, even less “like Bix” than on take “2.” His sound is more tentative and weak even compared to take “2,” let alone to the great Bix of 1927.
But as is the case with take “2,” repeated listening reveals more and more surprises, until, as the transcription makes clear, we realize we are in the presence of an exceptional musical imagination.

When a cornetist can do his work musically and easily and prove results, he certinly must be on the right track, regardless of what the "Book" says.
My father allowed me to attend some of the concerts, and there I listened entranced by what in my mind at the time was the greatest band ever heard by me. I sat in a front seat enraptured and enthralled with the playing of that band.
These instruments are a musical delight when properly played, and all of us should raise our hats to the true virtuoso on any one of them, because each is just as necessary to the music profession s is the cornetist.

PBS - JAZZ A Film By Ken Burns: Selected Artist Biography - Joe "King" Oliver
Indeed, of the earlier New Orleans cornetists, only Oliver was extensively recorded in the 1920s with an outstanding ensemble, and the revival of New Orleans style, which began shortly after his death, owed much to the rediscovery of his early three dozen Creole Band recordings, which were internationally known by the 1940s.
Oliver is generally considered one of the most important musicians in the New Orleans style.
After 1924 the quality of his recordings declined, partly because of recurrent tooth and gum ailments and partly because his style was at odds with that of his younger sidemen; but with a good orchestra he was capable of coherent and energetic playing even as late as 1930.
