Cornet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The cornet is a standard brass band instrument, which was derived from the bugle family.
The cornet is the main high voice of the brass band in the UK and other countries that have British-style brass bands.
However, cornets and trumpets are not entirely interchangeable because the timbre (or tone quality) of their sound differs.

CORNET - LoveToKnow Article on CORNET
The treble clef is used in notation, and in England the music for the cornet is usually written as sounded, but most French and German composers score for it as for a transposing instrument; for example, the music for the B! cornet is written in a key one tone higher than that of the composition.
The history of the cornet is a record of the endeavours of successive musical instrument makers to overcome this inherent defect in construction.
Hamburg, writing on the orchestra in 1713 i gives a description of the Zinek as a member of the orchestra, but in 1739,1 in his work on the perfect conductor, he deplores the decrease of its popularity in church music, from which it seems to be banished as useless.

 Cornet
Today, the cornet is used primarily in the British Brass Band style of music where the cornet is a unique section in the ensemble.
Much of the concert band music over the years was composed with the cornet in mind, but today, most ensembles use the cornet and trumpet interchangeably and most virtuoso work is performed on the trumpet.
This causes the cornet’s tone to have more of a mellow sound.
