Piano Concerto - definition of Piano Concerto in Encyclopedia
A piano concerto is a concerto for solo piano and orchestra.
Concertos specifically written for the piano were first composed in the Classical music era.
The most important composer in the development of the form was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who, like many later composers, played the solo part of his works in many concerts.

It is unnecessary to speak of the other movements of concerto form, as the sectional structure that so easily results from the opposition between solo and orchestra is not of great disadvantage to slow movements and finales, which accordingly do not show important differences from the ordinary types of symphonic and chamber music.
The most usual kind of concerto is one that pits a solo instrument against a full orchestra in three movements.
Thus in the opening tutti of the D minor concerto the second subject is announced in B flat minor.

 The Baroque Concerto
Interestingly, Bach's Concerto for 4 Harpsichords and Orchestra is an adaptation of a concerto for 4 violins and strings by Vivaldi.
While concertos were being written for almost every imaginable instrument as soloist with orchestra, together with various combinations, the harpsichord remained the poor workhorse of baroque music, its purpose being to act as continuo providing a background harmonic base and a thump to keep the orchestra in time.
It was Bach who gave the harpsichord solo status in the concerto, and having composed at least eight concertos for harpsichord, he then went on to write concertos for 2, 3 and 4 harpsichords with orchestra.

Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61
Beethoven did not compose a full-scale concerto for the violin until he had completed all the concertos he wrote for his own use (the first four of his five piano concertos) and the Triple Concerto, in which the violin shares solo honors with the cello and piano.
That is not to say, however, that he was without guidance in the specific area of writing for violin and orchestra, which he found in the music of eminent virtuoso-composers as closely identified with the violin as he and Mozart were with the piano.
He was also the composer of a violin concerto that was roundly admired in his own time.

Concerto Palatino delivers delicious sonic bliss where the flamboyant art of improvisation triumphs: lucky Venetians who were surrounded every day with the beauty of a music so learned and so brilliant.
Following in the footsteps of these former virtuosi, their aim is to restore these instruments to an active and respected place in concert life, and to cultivate a love of their music among audiences and players alike.
Their highly acclaimed concerts and recordings have brought an appreciation of their important but little known music to modern audiences, and stimulated many young players to take up these instruments, practically unknown a generation ago.

Concerto in E minor for Violin and Orchestra, WoO 15 of Felix Draeseke
Only the piano concerto has appeared in print, though a movement of the violin concerto was published in an arrangement for violin and keyboard in 1915 (more about that later).
The concerto is 100% intact, though this writer’s microfilm from SLUB did not include a solo violin part, possibly another reason for the term "unvollständig" on the entry.
Although the orchestral score and presumed set of parts for Draeseke’s violin concerto have disappeared, the work is not really "lost", for a violin and piano reduction, obviously made for rehearsal purposes, is housed in the music manuscript collection of the Saxon State Library in Dresden under the catalog entry MUS 7099-B-501.

The story of this piano concerto and its ultimate rejection by the man to whom it was dedicated is, perhaps, one of the most famous tales in all of classical music.
So it was that the performance of Tchaikovsky piano concerto, a performance which was familiar to many in the audience and had arouse them to enthusiasm previously, this time took on an extra measure of inspiration.
The melodies didn't come so easily as earlier in life, and he spent long nights "walking up and down the room for hours" waiting for the musical ideas to form in his mind.

He performed the Beethoven Concerto by sight-reading (though there is some dispute about this) with an unrehearsed orchestra, and he divided the work up, inserting a sonata of his own after the first movement, playing his sonata with the violin up-side-down, and on one string.
Piano concertos were more popular during that time, and Beethoven was persuaded to write a piano version, which was published the following year, a year before the composer subjected the violin concerto to a final revision.
In 1806 Beethoven was persuaded to write his monumental violin concerto in D Major, Opus 61, for Franz Clement, leader of the theater orchestra at Wien.

 Musical Forms - Concerto
But the traditional three-movement solo concerto inherited from the 19th century has proved remarkably resilient, and on the whole resistant to the programmatic elements that have often invaded the symphony.
Most were heard as interval music in oratorios, as were Handel's organ concertos, a form he seems to have originated and one which became popular among English composers.
A more conservative late Romantic tradition, retaining the ritornello design for the first movement but in a strongly symphonic manner, is represented by the concertos of Brahms, Dvorak (for cello) and Elgar (for violin).

So that leaves 21 original solo keyboard concertos, all of them written over a span of just 17 years, mostly for highly profitable all-Mozart concerts in Vienna in the 1780s, in which the composer himself was the acclaimed soloist.
Pianists tend not to record Mozart concertos unless they have a special sympathy for the music, so it's hard to go wrong with any modern recording featuring a well-known pianist.
So a Mozart piano concerto can be identified by either of two numbers, or both - Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K.466, for instance.

Carlos Nakai and that it incorporate music from Canyon's first recording, Natay, Navajo Singer (CR-6160), which was released in 1951.
On March 4, 1993, the commissioned concerto, titled Two World Concerto, was premiered by the Phoenix Symphony under the direction of James Sedares in a series of soldout performances.
