Close to the Edge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Close to the Edge is the fifth album by British progressive rock band Yes.
Close to the Edge set a trend for Yes of including a single epic song significantly longer than the others which was followed in the later albums Relayer (which featured "The Gates of Delirium") and Going for the One (1977) (which featured "Awaken").
Many consider Close to the Edge to be not only the greatest album in Yes' discography, but the best album of the progressive and art rock genres.

Close to the Edge is my favorite all time song, this is, naturally, the studio version where one can appreciate the music in its pure state.
"Close to the Edge" is often credited as their classic album, and though it took a couple of listens to fully appreciate, I can certainly see why.
This album is probably not the best place to start listening to Yes, instead I would look for the Yessongs (has the three songs in live versions and a lot more songs) and then move on to this album to enjoy the original versions.

The Yes Album is considered by most to be one of their best albums (Up there with "Fragile" and "Close To The Edge") and it is not hard to hear why.
Howe's guitar work during the first minute or so of "Close to the Edge", is to me a miracle that grows on me the more I listen to it, and to me was alone more than worth the price of this CD set.

The Edge’s most effective means of songwriting and coming up with parts was emptying himself of what he already knew: "Whenever I start working on a song, I immediately try to forget everything, to empty my hands and head of anything that might be hanging over from another song or album.

Close to the Edge also sees the whole band composing together.
Although released pretty soon after Fragile, Close to the Edge was a slow album to make in terms of studio time.
Instead of having the material largely worked out beforehand, the band moved to partially putting together their long works in the studio, as with the side-long title track, the band's most ambitious work to date.

We started experimenting with slaving tape machines together, which meant perhaps starting the machines 40 or 50 times until they played in sync.
