 Easter Seals Virginia: Chuck Mangione
Chuck has recorded two albums for Chesky Records.
Chuck's years with the Jazz Brothers overlapped with his attending the Eastman School of Music and eventually resulted in his solo album debut.
In 1989, Chuck released two live albums, "The Boys From Rochester," featuring Steve Gadd, Gap Mangione, Joe Romano and frank Pullara, plus a double album, Chuck Mangione Live at the Village Gate.

Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities: 25th Anniversary Concert with Chuck Mangione
Chuck Mangione returns to the creative source that inspired his GRAMMY®-award winning album Bellavia with Everything For Love, a tribute to all that is close to the heart of the man with the hat.
In 1989, after the release of two new albums, Chuck simply stopped recording and touring.
Praised for his musical innovation and performance ability, Chuck's soulful songs and heartfelt melodies have made him an influential jazz icon for over 30 years.

RGJ.com - Music festival features Chuck Mangione
Mangione went solo in the early 1970s, assembling various bands for his music, which was heading in a lighter, pop direction.
Mangione made several more, but less successful, albums in the 1980s before disappearing from the music scene in the 1990s.
Mangione led a bop quintet with his brother while going to school and later recorded with the big bands of Woody Herman and Maynard Ferguson.

CD Review of Chuck Mangione - 20th Century Masters - The Best of Chuck Mangione on A & M Records @ jazzreview.com
Chuck Mangione crossed the line from contemporary jazz to pop and easy listening in a big way.
With elements of jazz as a foundation, Mangione combined sweetly toned pop into many songs, allowing a much larger and more accepting audience into his musical sphere of influence.
I particularly enjoyed some of the guitar breaks in some of the songs, which reminded me of George Benson’s work in that timeframe, and the vocals were a welcome change.

NPR : Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz: Chick Mangione
Chuck Mangione is perhaps best know for his 1977 hit, "Feels So Good," which rose all the way to #2 on the Billboard pop charts.
Of his great talent for writing memorable melodies, Mangione says, "to do it always right, that is what music is to me."
The two formed the band Jazz Brothers while they were attending the Eastman School of Music in Rochester.

In the 1970's Chuck Mangione recorded for Mercury and A and M in the 1980's.
They recorded a set for Mercury in 1972 but otherwise Mangione's recordings in the 1970's generally used large orchestras and vocalists (including Esther Satterfield).
Further albums included 'Fun And Games' in 1980, which was released at A and M before he switched to CBS in 1982 for 'Love Notes'.

 Gap Mangione Biography
There were tours with Chuck Mangione: the small jazz group "Little Giants Reunion Tour" and "The Hat's Back" tour with a 100-member symphony orchestra and the original Jazz Brothers album was reissued on CD completing the set.
In all, Gap has recorded seven solo albums and is heard on ten recordings with Chuck Mangione.
By the time Gap was 13, he was playing the blues on the family piano and encouraging his brother, Chuck, to join him in improvisations; at 15, he was writing and arranging for local big bands.

Chuck Mangione to give benefit concert Feb. 6
Mangione has been a part of the popular jazz scene for the past three decades, composing, performing and recording pieces and albums that have earned him two Grammy awards, 12 Grammy nominations, a platinum and four Gold albums.
With his appealing melodies and brisk jazz rhythms, Mangione has garnered immense success in the realms of both jazz and popular music.
The album of the same name peaked on the pop charts at number two, right behind "Saturday Night Fever," and went on to earn a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year.

 Chuck Mangione - Verve Records
During the same period, Mangione recorded his first album as a leader, Recuerdo, for Riverside’s Jazzland subsidiary; he also studied at the prestigious Eastman School of Music.
That same year, Mangione signed with AandM Records and began scoring with one solid-selling album after another.
He switched from trumpet to flügelhorn, and he also shifted his musical focus from the hard-driving jazz that typified the Jazz Brothers to more lyrical pieces that leaned toward pop music.

Splendid: Departments: &: Jazz Legends: Chuck Mangione, Ben Sidran
The focus instead is often on pop crossover material, including a number of tunes with vocals -- and this is where it all goes horribly awry.
Manetta is doubly impressive playing fusion-style electric guitar solos on "Hot Consuela", a tune that also showcases the considerable energy of percussionist Billy Martin.
What's more, these two DVDs contain shows where both men are performing material that is at least as much pop as it is jazz.

Chuck Mangione was the very first jazz musician I started listening to.

I am not a big fan of smooth jazz, but I dig the albums that were put out in the 70's by Chuck.
He is currently touring and has a new DVD out (actually from a concert in 1989).
I wish Chuck would put out more albums.

SoundStage! Chuck Mangione - The Feeling's Back
At the end of Chuck Mangione’s album, I felt as though I had missed something.
Flügelhorn maestro Chuck Mangione’s brand-new Chesky release sports track titles like "Maracangalha" by Dorival Caymmi and "Fotografia" by Antonio Carlos Jobim.
A whole genre of cool jazz evolved around a similar set of parameters, one that could leave a listener, well, cool or become, in the right hands, a terrifically moody, cigarette-smoke kind of blue affair.

SoundStage! Chuck Mangione - Everything for Love
Everything for Love is the perfect music to listen to on an early Sunday morning, while you digest both breakfast and the Times.
If you’ve listened to Mangione in the past, then Gary Niewood’s name and sound will be very, very familiar to you.
Many of the tracks on Everything for Love are reminiscent of Mangione albums past.

Chuck Mangione does play a pleasant trumpet. And the songs on this collectiona re reasonably soothing as background music.
What annoys me most is the attempt, even in the liner notes, to disguise the actual circumstances of recording, including names of musicians on the sessions (in the interest of full disclosure, the drummer is Joe Bonadio).

Mangione’s music is world-renowned and he’s recognized for his trademark hat.
He is currently caricatured on the hit Fox TV show, ‘King of The Hill.’ Since 2000 Mangione has recorded two very well received albums for Chesky Records, “The Feelings Back” and “Everything for Love.”
The concert is a fund-raiser with proceeds to benefit Project Kids Worldwide, a charity supported by Chuck Mangione.

 Chuck Mangione The Feeling's Back
Nothing wrong with that (it is his gig), but one should be aware that Mangione isn't playing much Jazz these days; the session is long on melody but short on improvisation.
Personnel: Chuck Mangione, flugelhorn; Cliff Korman, piano, keyboards; Jay Azzolina, guitar; Paulo Braga, drums; Café, percussion; David Fincke, acoustic and electric bass ("Mountain Flight"); Kip Reid, electric bass ("Once Upon a Time," "Leonardo's Lady"); Sarah Carter, cello; Gerry Niewood, flute, alto flute; Maucha Adnet, Jackie Presti, Annette Sanders, vocals.
If you heard any of Chuck's well-received albums of a generation ago, you'll pretty much know what to expect.

Book Chuck Mangione for Event, Meeting, Gala
In fact, many people point to the death of Gillespie last year as the event that propelled Mangione back into music.
Mangione signed with A&M Records and delivered two extremely successful releases in one year - "Chase the Clouds Away," which was used as background music during the telecast of the 1976 Olympic Games; and "Bellavia" ("beautiful way") named to honor his mother, which won Mangione his first Grammy award.
He first attracted attention with his older brother, Gap, in a mainstream jazz band, The Jazz Brothers, in which he played trumpet much like that of the man who he refers to as his musical father...Dizzy Gillespie.

Notes: A nice album played live in the studio without any overdubs or corrections.
Dedicated to his parents, Chuck is the result of the support they have given him and his music all along his career.
This feels a little bigger than his usual sound, mostly through the addition of the orchestra, but also because of the arrangement of some of the material.

 Playing with Chuck Mangione
I've never heard you play live with any band.
What made it really special was that we sounded like a regular quartet (Chuck played piano) when Jerry played his solos but when Chuck played solos the rhythm section was only bass and drums which gave me a lot of harmonic freedom.
I'm glad you have good memories from those times in Chuck's band.
