Chuck Berry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Berry was also a large influence on Elvis Presley.
However, when Berry was released from prison in 1963, his musical career enjoyed a resurgence due to many of the British Invasion acts of the '60's (most notably the Beatles and the Rolling Stones) releasing cover versions of classic Berry hits.
While there is debate about who recorded the first rock and roll record, Chuck Berry's early recordings, including "Maybellene" (1955) fully synthesized the rock and roll form, combining blues and country music with teenaged lyrics about girls and cars, with impeccable diction alongside distinctive electric guitar solos and an energetic stage persona.

Chuck Berry: Creator of Rock and Roll
Berry's career was on the fast track until 1962, when he was imprisoned for violating the Mann Act for driving an underage white girl across state lines.
Chuck Berry drew on all of these influences to create his special brand of the hard-driving, youth-focused music called rock 'n' roll.
But Berry, a born showman, was also a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and comedian, and he was soon fronting a trio with the great boogie-woogie pianist Johnnie Johnson and the wonderful drummer Ebby Hardy playing behind him.

Berry is a musical icon who established rock and roll as a musical form and brought the worlds of black and white together in song.
For his first stage performance, Berry chose to sing a Jay McShann song called "Confessin' the Blues." It was at his high school's student musical performance, when the blues was well-liked but not considered appropriate for such an event.
For this reason, tunes like "Johnny B. Goode," "Maybellene" and "Memphis" have become anthems to an integrated American youth and popular culture.

The archetypal rock and roller, Chuck Berry melded blues, country, and a witty, defiant teen outlook into songs that influenced vitually every rock musician in his wake.

Part of the secret to its originality was Berry's blazing 24-bar guitar solo in the middle of it, the imaginative rhyme schemes in the lyrics, and the sheer thump of the record, all signaling that rock & roll had arrived and it was no fad.
Like Brian Wilson said, he wrote "all of the great songs and came up with all the rock'n'roll beats." Those who do not claim him as a seminal influence or profess a liking for his music and showmanship show their ignorance of rock's development as well as his place as the music's first great creator.
