However, McBride was able to co-produce a yet-to-be-reissued CD of James Brown's jazz-tinged LP, "Soul on Top" (King Records, 1969), which was recorded with Louis Bellson's Big Band.
In 2000, McBride released his fourth and most successful CD since his debut "Gettin To It" was released in 1995.
While recording and touring with Redman the following year in his "Moodswing" band, McBride was signed to Verve Records in the summer of 1994, recording his first CD as a leader, "Gettin' To It" - one of the biggest selling jazz records of 1995.

Since drummers vary in their use of 'beat placement' - a term used to describe the three ways of playing rhythm, which are 'on top', 'in the middle', or 'behind' the beat - this not a simple as it sounds, as Christian explains.

 Jelly review: Christian McBride
This album may not be the best forum for Christian McBride’s music, but it’s always fun to get a peek at a musician’s influences.
While it’s encouraging to see contemporary jazz musicians, such as McBride, who appreciate songs that don’t exactly come from their particular musical history, not everything here stands up well to such jazzy renditions.
One look at bassist Christian McBride’s latest release with, of all things, George Duke listed as its producer, and it might give any self-respecting traditional jazz fan a case of the frightened chills.

 Music - CD Review
What the Christian McBride Band launches into for the rest of the album is a rocking take on the fusion jazz of the 1970s and '80s.
What the Christian McBride Band seems to be saying instead is: "A wide range of music grew up on what we play." That range — hip-hop, funk and techno — is articulated on this album with remarkable clarity.
But McBride and his band succeed in making it work because they're not interested in recreating this music — they want to take it to the next level.

McBride who, after 70-plus straight-ahead albums as a sideman, has picked up an electric bass and focused his monster chops on a genre desperately in need of rehabilitation.
Halfway through the recording, Sci-Fi acquires a familiar quality, what with McBride's prominent, woofer-rattling bass on the title cut (echoes of Jaco Pastorious), the keening keyboards on "Havona" (reminiscent of Joe Zawinul), and Ron Blake's soprano saxophone lines on the same (Wayne Shorter?).
This Week: McBride walks the line between rock and jazz, drummer Bruford sends us dancing, and guitarist Towner goes it alone.

 Christian McBride
McBride's third album for Verve reflects this sort of diversity, with allusions to Weather Report ("Wayne's World") as well as flat-out funk ("Brown Funk"), New Orleans second line ("I'm Coming Home") and a shuffle ("A Family Affair") for good measure.
The neoclassical purists will almost certainly voice their complaints, but the bottom line is that even the frequent smooth moments on this album are well-executed and highly musical.
At the same time, A Family Affair is a much more deliberately commercial album than McBride's previous efforts; with guest vocals by Will Downing and Vesta, and covers of Stevie Wonder's "Summer Soft" and Kool and the Gang's "Open Sesame," this album holds a lot of radio crossover potential.

CD Review of Christian McBride - Vertical Vision on Warner Brothers @ jazzreview.com
For several years now, bassist Christian McBride has been dead set on proving true the old axiom that not only does jazz have the ability to broaden the scope and depth of popular music, but that the latter can also rejuvenate and invigorate the former when it hits a rut.
With a little luck, McBride will continue to listen to his own desires more than those of the record executives at the major labels he frequents; however, hopefully one day that exploratory spirit will yield a more synthetic whole.
Particularly when he is worrying least about what purists will say, he ends up with the most compelling, forward-looking music.
