 MUSIC EXTREME - REVIEWS - DECEMBER 2004
Lyrics by Reifert (1,3,4,6,7,9,10), Bower (2,5,8,11), Allen (12)
After listening their previous one I find out that each of the Abscess albums is a step forward from this guys from the Autopsy spirit.
And the arrangements are born from teh imagination of Chris Rehn who plays in Abyssos too.The tracks are powerful and memorable at the same time.

Autopsy - Acts Of The Unspeakable
Chris Reifert (Drums and Vocals) Danny Coralles (Guitars), Eric Cutler (Guitars) and Josh Barohn on Bass would throw in elements of doom, death, grind and occasionally the odd punk beat into one song.
If Reifert and Co. decided to reform Autopsy today, recorded, and released an album full of their own farts I would give it a high rating.
Add to that the often-chaotic lead guitar and you have a song that you think must have lasted for at least 4 minutes.

 Corpse Grinding Death Metal
Chris: There' 12 songs on it, and it should be out in April (hopefully).
Chris: I think they are great, as long as they don't exist to talk shit like some do.
Chris: I haven't heard either of those bands, but I like fast songs as long as there not machine gun speed, I'm not really into million miles-per-hour drumming.

 Chris Reifert - Definition, explanation
Autopsy split up in 1995 and Reifert and his band mate Danny Coralis formed a new band in the same style called Abscess.
In 1988 Reifert started his own band Autopsy.
In this band he played not only drums but handled the vocals as well.

 m e t a l h e l . n e t
Chris Reifert is one great bastard to make - literally - class A albums.
And not to forget what was Autopsy about, Reifert gives you some sludge-oriented noise, like one of the best songs in the album, Tomb of the Unknown Junkie (what a great title...).
And now this new Abscess album Through the Cracks of Death takes it all back to the home as released by Autopsy's label Peaceville and recorded in a very same studio as legendary Mental Funeral, Different Fur Recording Studios.

Krieg - Forum - Abscess - Through the cracks of death
Chris Reifert & Danny Coralles are both founder members of late 80's/early 90's gore metal band 'Autopsy' who were signed to Peaceville for 4 albums in the early 90's.
The first commercial offering from Abscess was a collection of their early demo's, released as the album 'Urine Junkies' on Relapse Records in 1995.
If some of those names sound familiar well they really should be as they are about one half of the former heaviest, doomiest, darkest, stonedist, and undeniably sickest death metal band to ever grace our record collections; Autopsy.

 Metallian.com
Reifert was a member of Death in the early days and can be heard on that band's classic Scream Bloody Gore.
However, after three years in in Death, the drummer leaves Death, not wishing to follow Chuck to Florida.

Teufel's Tomb : Brutal Isn't Just A Way Of Life... It's Also Stupid!
That raw, gargling sound of the guitar work and Reifert's own vocal style took many listens to become accustomed to and finally appreciate.
The overall feel of the album just exudes oozing disgust: listening to this slab of filth sounds like someone let the town pervert into the county morgue to dissect the month-long rotting corpse of six year-old Susie Wilkins alone… and the pervert has a fetish for six year-old necrophilia.
Damned And Mummified is definitely an album to pick up for any fan of Chris Reifert's projects, be it Autopsy or The Ravenous.

MetalMania - Your Gateway To Metal On The Web
Chris has also appeared in bands such as Doomed (guitar/drums), Nuclear Death (backing vocals) and Immortal Fate (backing vocals).
After having breathed new life into Death with Chuck Schuldiner in 1984, Chris Reifert leaves the band in 1987 and founds Autopsy.
Debuting in the late 80`s with `Severed Survival` as one of the first bands to proclaim themselves as `Death Metal`, Autopsy had a `slow, grinding and sludgy` sound akin to that of Obituary.

Former Autopsy drummer Chris Reifert and guitarist Danny Coralles decided to take that vision farther and added guitarist/bassist Clint Bower to the mix for a new band.
After the dissolution of the well-liked Autopsy, metal fans were hoping for a punk-influenced death metal band that had a similar dark humorous vibe.

Excellencies Killjoy and Chris Reifert are the main minds behind this project, drenched with their mother bands' sounds for all the record's length.
The beginning is entrusted with " Razor Blade Salvation "; horrorific and painful screams stand out of the swamped guitars the way Killjoy has accustomed us; the 2 offer their vocal duties in a masterful way like no (other) demon could equal.
As suggested by the title, " Baptized by Demon's Piss ", is a splint of hyronical thrash gore with cruel inserts.

The album was a great success, but nevertheless, Schuldiner decided to move back to Florida, leaving Chris Reifert behind.
They recorded the Mutilation demo, which led to a deal with (Click link for more info and facts about Combat Records) Combat Records.
He teamed up with a second guitar player named John Hand, who however never played anything for Death, but showed up on the album cover.

 Vampire Magazine - Abscess
Chris' vocals still sound as sick and unique as in their Autopsy days.
The music is mostly mid-paced with occasional doom and fast parts and although Abscess are not technical or breaking any speed records, they simply have the old school atmosphere and song writing.
After having been on Peaceville for their entire Autopsy career, they now returned to Peaceville with Abscess after some other label adventures (Relapse, Listenable).

Blistering.com :: Music :: Reviews :: Abscess - Through The Cracks Of Death
Both Chris Reifert (Drums and vocals) and Danny Coralles (Guitars) are the masterminds behind this monstrosity prior to the band going full time, with Clint Bower (Guitars and vocals) and Joe Allen (Bass) completing the group.
Their last album Tormented was a lacklustre affair, with both the song writing and the production to blame for the albums lacklustre reaction from both fans and press alike.
After some underground releases through the Relapse label, Abscess finally signed on the dotted line with Peaceville (Also the home of Autopsy) with Through The Cracks Of Death (Their fourth) being their first release on their new label.

 Sorted magAZine - Distorted
According to Reifert, the band wasn't "wasted this time round", (they do like their whiskey and funny cigarettes, it must be said) deciding to "concentrate on the recording instead".
Side projects seem to be all the rage lately, anyone who's anyone in a band having several side bands of their own, and Reifert is no exception.
Well, with a professional attitude like that (cough) it really shows, for "Tormented" is the sound of a band coming of age, and with tracks like the 7-minute closer 'Madness at the end of the world', it won't be long before they crawl gnashing and hissing from the underground.

The overall feel of this album, when combined with the artwork is that it may actually be an old demo more than an album.
I would say that it is probably a bit more gore influenced than either of those bands ever was, probably due to Chris Reifert being around, but overall the sound is that dirty old Stockholm sound.
This is one of those side bands I don't understand since it's members of Entombed and Dismember making what is basically an old Dismember or old Entombed record.

Chris Reifert - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After Chuck wanted to move back to Florida, Chris decided to stay in San Francisco, in 1988 and started his own band Autopsy.
In this band he played not only drums but handles the sick vocals as well.
He recorded the infamous Scream Bloody Gore album with Death.

Death metallers Abscess, featuring ex-members of Death, Autopsy and Hexx, have officially signed to Peaceville after one album on Listenable Records and two albums on Relapse Records.
Abscess' first album for Peaceville, Through the Cracks of Death, is according to drummer and death metal icon Chris Reifert, "our best yet." The line-up for Through the Cracks of Death is: Chris Reifert (drums/vocals), Danny Coralles (guitar), Clint Bower (guitar/vocals) and Joe Allen (bass).
In similar news, Reifert's other project, The Ravenous, featuring members of Brutal Truth and Necrophagia, have completed the writing process for their second full-length album, Blood Delirium.

 Death - Scream Bloody Gore
and the drumming of Chris Reifert is loud and vicious and is rather simple, but fits the music very well.
The guitars are crushing with the catchy riffs and blistering leads composed by "Evil" Chuck Schuldiner.

Transcending the Mundane: Interview with The Ravenous
If we had a huge budget I'm sure Killjoy and Chris would come up with some really sick shit to complement the music, not to mention our occasional live shows would also be grimly enhanced.
I'm afraid I can't help you much here, Chris writes the music, but I'm thinking of stepping out and contributing a song for the next one.
How does writing and recording for the Ravenous differ from your other bands?

Autopsy was one of the slow bands of death metal, drawing heavily on Black Sabbath riffs and bleak themes and close in style to doom metal.

The band has had a falling out with Relapse and is currently on France's Listenable.
Three demo tapes later Relapse picks up the band and releases the debut Urine junkies which is nothing more than a collection of the aforementioned demo tunes.
Rising from the ashes that was Bay Area's Autopsy, Abscess first released its Demo #1 in 1994.

RevelationZ Magazine - Album Review - Abscess - Through The Cracks Of Death
I consider this album as being old school death metal; it is fairly simple, straightforward and primitive in nature.
The word that best describes Chris Reifert's vocals is "sick" - and remember, in death metal that is a good thing.
Through The Cracks Of Death is the fourth full length album from Abscess - the California based gore/death metal band.

 BeatTheBlizzard>Abscess - Damned And Mummified
The fact is that ABSCESS has been around more than 10 years already and a look at the line-up reveals that this damned dirt-death metal is comprised of experienced extreme musicians like drummer Chris Reifert and guitarists Danny Coralles and Chris Bower and Joe Allen on bass.
ABSCESS is an American band and the fact that I’ve never heard of this Bay area based quartet before doesn’t mean that we are talking about a newborn band here.
So what can one expect from musicians with background from bands like Death, Autopsy, Hexx and so on?

 Live 4 Metal - Reviews
The special guest star is none other than Chris Reifert (Death, Autopsy, Abscess, The Ravenous) who makes much more than a cameo appearance — he contributes backing vocals, lead vocals, drums, guitar, and songwriting!
Specifically, the band consists of vocalist Matti Karki (Dismember), drummer Peter Stjarnvind (Entombed), guitarist Uffe Cederlund (Entombed), and bassist Richard Cabeza who just recently parted ways with Dismember.
In short, whereas the debut sounded dead on to Autopsy, Ravenous Murderous takes a few pinches more of the Entombed/Dismember sound.

 BNR Metal Pages -- Autopsy
The band broke up around the time of their last album, with Reifert and Coralles moving on to Abscess.
Having played on Death 's seminal debut, Scream Bloody Gore, drummer Chris Reifert decided to leave both band and home, moving to San Francisco, where Autopsy was formed in 1987.
More recently, Reifert has teamed up with Danny Lilker ( Anthrax, Stormtroopers Of Death) and Killjoy ( Necrophagia) in a band called The Ravenous.

It all started with their demo's back in 1987, which are also released on cd a couple of months ago, that earned them a deal with Peaceville.
The exclusive tracks are live ones of "Service of a Vacant Coffin", "Robbing the Grave", "Shiteater" and one track of their demo and another from a Peaceville compilation.
Like on every Peaceville-compilation this one contains some words from the band, and ofcourse the words are from Chris Reifert.

After a partnership with Death, he formed Autopsy for the sake of recording "death metal" in the late 1980s, and has moved on from Autopsy to Abscess, a grind/punk/metal project, as well as several other bands in the quest for loud and grindingly horrific music.
In the an(n)als of metal history, the name Chris Reifert sticks out like a red flag to anyone tracking the progress of the development of the genre.

But after a few songs, the shock value wears off, and it becomes clear that Coralles and Bower are fairly limited musicians, and that Reifert's maniacal pounding is the only thing musically interesting on the whole album.
Abscess would up the musicianship considerably on their next few releases, but Urine Junkies is strictly for fans.
Well, yeah, this stuff is pretty oogy, no question, but when shock is so obviously the intended effect, one eventually wants not to be shocked just out of spite.
