Soon Cornell was interested in expanding his talent as a musician, and taught himself guitar and bass; his learning of the guitar has been a huge influence on Soundgarden's music, and he invariably has guitar in hand in shows these days.

 VH1.com : Chris Cornell : Biography
Cornell's first officially released solo composition, the acoustic "Seasons," was the highlight of the 1992 motion picture soundtrack Singles.
Cornell also showed a great talent for lyric writing; while his lyrics wouldn't make sense if read without the music, they evoked all kinds of images when he put the two together.
Cornell switched to vocals around the time of the band's formation, with friend Hiro Yamamoto on bass, Kim Thayil on guitar, and eventually, Matt Cameron on drums.

Cornell gave the San Francisco crowd a preview of his first solo album, Euphoria Morning, which comes out Sept. 21, while reprising stray solo tracks from the past and a lone Soundgarden song.
Self-admittedly striving for the diversity of the Beatles, Cornell has succeeded in making music that breathes the same kind of emotion with a healthy '90s updating.
But it was the soundscape of Cornell's Euphoria Morning music that really fueled the show's momentum.

Cornell uses a great deal more acoustic guitar than ever before, at times evoking late-period Beatles.
Indeed, that quality--along with Cornell's poetic vision--makes this record a classic rock winner, destined to be played alongside new ones by the Dave Matthews Band and Robert Cray.
"Mission" is the song closest to the old Soundgarden, an almost atonal wah-wah sound that uses Cornell's wailing vocals as an extra instrument.

 Chris Cornell Euphoria Morning
On many of the tracks, Chris seems to be looking at the world through a romanticized lens with his lyrics and musical style.
"Can't Change Me," the first track on the album, also the first single Chris released, is far from the angst anthems of the Soundgarden years, but it has already begun infiltrating the airwaves and music charts, re-establishing Chris as the intense vocalist and songwriter he has always been.
Chris Cornell, one of the more distinctive voices of that early '90s alternative rock phenomenon, has come back to haunt us with a new solo CD, entitled Euphoria Morning, released September 21, 1999.

Cornell's first solo venture was "Sunshower", which appeared on the 1998 soundtrack to "Great Expectations." Guitarist Alain Johannes and bassist Natasha Shneider of Los Angeles rock band Eleven, who backed Cornell on "Sunshower," also appear on Euphoria Morning, and Johannes co-produced the album with Cornell.
Anchored by Cornell's vocals and the aggressive guitars of Kim Thayil, Soundgarden finally broke through with Superunknown (1994), which featured their first radio hit, "Black Hole Sun," as well as "Spoonman" and "Fell on Black Days." Over their 12-year career, Soundgarden sold more than 20 million albums.

Seattle sludge slingers Soundgarden made a living out of cathartic, woe-is-me wailing (we're talking the banshee vocals of Chris Cornell and the crypt-creaking guitar of Kim Thayil), but this wallowing in grim depression ironically proved to be the band's most uplifting career effort.
The album only gets bleaker with the sluggish "Mailman," as Cornell sings in almost a whimper "I know I'm headed for the bottom." The meaning of the hard-hitting title-track "Superunknown" is rather obscure, which adds a bit of mystery to the album without coming off as pretentious.
I can't really think of a place to start in praising this album, but Chris Cornell's vocals are as good a place as any.
