 E.J.N. - CHICK COREA
He formed the Elektric Band in 1985, debuting with Chick Corea Elektric Band on GRP Records.
Chick grew up listening to the music of Beethoven, Chopin, Bach and Mozart along with the recordings of Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Lester Young and Horace Silver, who became an especially strong influence on the aspiring pianist.
His avant-garde group Circle, which ran from 1969 to 1971, was an important force in free form improvisation, reflecting the influence of jazz musicians like Paul Bley and Ornette Coleman while also drawing from 20th Century composers like John Cage and Karlheine Stockhausen.

Chick Corea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Corea has mentioned Hubbard as a continual source of inspiration under the "special thanks" notes in all of his later albums.
A notable influence was concert pianist Salvatore Sullo for whom Corea started taking lectures at age eight, who introduced him to classical music, helping spark his interest in musical composition.
The rest of the tunes are Corea originals, and the album shows the composer and pianist in an extremely fertile phase, full of energy.

 Monika's Chick Corea paper
The melodies of Corea's compositions are very lyrical and memorable, many of his songs have become part of the standard repertoire of jazz musicians.
Inspired by his classical performances, Corea composed his own concerto for piano and orchestra and released his Children's Songs, a collection of 20 short piano pieces reminiscent of Darius Milhaud's ragtime and tango influenced piano music.
Already during the late 80ies, Corea, Patitucci, and Weckl, had toured and recorded as an acoustic trio.

 Chick Corea :Rarum 3
During his days at ECM records, Corea produced an output that was more in line with the label's overall aesthetic, and this music is well represented on Chick Corea: Selected Recordings/Rarum III, part of the label's Rarum series on which artists select the best from their work for the label.
Corea's harmonically complex composition "Desert Air" is a wonderful workout for the two musicians, and a pleasure to hear again.
Corea also takes a solo and reminds us that he was one of a handful of musicians, along with Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, and Bill Evans, who fully realized the possibilities of the Fender electric piano.

 Chick Corea
Chick Corea remains one of the most diverse musicians of all time, having composed a piano concerto, scoring a motion picture, performing solo worldwide, and creating a number one Billboard album with the Akoustic Band in 1988.
Chick's appreciation for classical music is evident on his recent collaboration with Bobby McFerrin The Mozart Sessions (Sony Classical),with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, on which the adventurously improvisatorial spirit of both gentlemen shines through in their take on this great composers work.
During this period, Chick glided effortlessly between electric, acoustic, solo piano, and duos, with Gary Burton and fellow piano great Herbie Hancock.

Chick Corea and Gary Burton at Tanglewood by Seth Rogovoy
The concert began with "Love Castle," which Corea wrote and originally recorded with a big band on his 1976 album, "My Spanish Heart." Reconfigured as a duet, the piece was a showcase for Burton's pristine melodicism, his trademark four-mallet approach laying down playful waves of notes and chords over Corea's percussive comping.
With a musical partnership dating back nearly a quarter-century, Corea and Burton have a wealth of experience to draw upon, and their musical and temperamental affinity shone through in their deceptively casual renditions of old and new material.
The high points of the show included a tribute to bop pianist Bud Powell, a lively romp which featured Corea in disguise as the master improviser, and a version of Thelonious Monk's "Four In One," all sharp angles and jagged edges.

 Chick Corea - Verve Records
Chick completed a recording with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Corea.Concerto, for Sony Classical released October 1999.  Back in the early '80s Chick was introduced to Mozart's music by Friedrich Gulda.  Since then, Chick was determined to write a Piano Concerto of his own.
In the summer of 1999, Chick released Origin's 3rd recording, Change.   This was recorded within the relaxed confines of the home Chick shares with singer and wife Gayle Moran in Florida.  Chick and the band went to work on a set of material written specifically for Origin since the release of the debut.
That same year, Chick released a recording with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra with Bobby McFerrin as conductor.  This was their 2nd recording for Sony Classical, entitled The Mozart Sessions.  Their first duet recording, Play, was honored with a Grammy Award.

The lead "hook" of this track, although a good piece of music in its own right, hides the fact that more music "happens" on this track than may be evident on a first listen.
While some neophytes may be unnerved by Corea's matador poses on the front and back covers, said images are thankfully not harbingers of musical absurdity.

Chick Corea's four-decade career is the stuff of jazz lore, an amalgamation of influential, limit-stretching musical experiences which have filled many a page in 20th century music history encyclopedias.

In 1992, Chick realized a lifelong goal, forming Stretch Records, a label committed to stretching musical boundaries (like its founder) and focusing more on freshness and creativity than on musical style.
