Â Nico's 'Chelsea Girls'

"Chelsea Girl" is a good 67/68-ish art/folk rock album, Nico herself is what makes it stand out.
But let's not forget "Chelsea Girls" contains the big, lovely drone of "it was a pleasure then" straddling the middle of the LP like a giant fuck you sign to Dylan, Lenny Bruce and J. Browne.
What was the Chelsea area like at the time when this album came out?

In addition, Nico, one of the female superstars of The Chelsea Girls, has just put out a record album which includes a moody, Kurt Weillish song about the characters in the film.
Where Are The Chelsea Girls Taking Us Movies record the collective life of their audiences.
In a sense The Chelsea Girls is the testament of that class, the Iliad of the underground.

Also included will be five songs from Nico's Chelsea Girl, recorded during the same sessions with the Velvets -- guitarist Lou Reed, drummer Maureen Tucker, guitarist Sterling Morrison and multi-instrumentalist John Cale -- serving as the German singer's backing band.
The second disc will contain the mono mix of the album, the first time it has been issued on CD, as well as "Miss Joanie Lee," a previously unreleased track from a January 1966 rehearsal.
The first disc will feature the original stereo version of album, recorded in April and May of 1966.

Â Correct my Spelling!: Roadtrip Music Rundown Mark II

Chelsea Girl (the album from whence said tracks came) was okay, but it wasn't as good as the stuff she did with the Velvet Underground.
It doesn't seem, by the way, to be anything at all like either Tom Waits or Deathcab for Cutie, but this review seems to back up the record store girl's story, so maybe I just don't get it.
This was the CD I left the store with--roughly an hour of uncomfortable nodding later.

Cohen recorded the song in the studio as late as 1974 at the sessions for his album New Skin For The Old Ceremony but premiered the song live on March 23, 1972 at the third show of his London, Royal Albert Hall residency.
The following version, differing from the officially released one, is commonly known as Chelsea Hotel No.1 and is featured in Tony Palmer's 1972 tour-movie Bird On A Wire.
Long after this, Jon Bon Jovi wrote the song and shot his video for 'Midnight At Chelsea" in suite # 515.

I cannot help but feel, while wondering if Chelsea Girl by Nico should be filed alongside the Velvet Underground or in the existentialist female singer-songwriter section of my record collection, that he's right.
His attitude is that if DJs and journalists don't own a record player, they shouldn't be allowed to play his album.

This debut album from Nico, I would say is mostly a Donovan-ish folk album and is more conventional in song structure than her second album "The Marble Index".
Nico is still mostly remembered for her tambourine-shaking days in the Velvet Underground, though she departed after only one album, and began a long and excellent career as a solo singer.

"These Days" first appeared on Chelsea Girl (1967), the debut solo album from Nico, the haunted Teutonic beauty best known for providing the lead vocals on three songs on the first Velvet Underground album earlier that year.
Indie duo Mates of State released their interpretation on a split 7-inch single with Dear Nora on Polyvinyl Records this year.
Westerberg performed the song last year on Chicago radio station WXRT.

Quite unlike Chelsea Girl, Desertshore has a character that immediately commands attention.
Two of the songs (“Abschied” and “Mütterlein”) and the pictures from the album jacket come from Phillipe Garrel’s La Cicatrice Intérieure.
Desertshore just features her songwriting, and singing, as well as John Cale’s arrangements, performances and producing, all at their highest levels.

The sparse, hushed "Bright Smile" ensued, with Ritter sounding like he was channeling Springsteen circa "Nebraska.” An early highlight was also the unreleased "Girl in the War" which recaptured the essence of his folksy forefathers like Dylan and the late Townes Van Zandt.
As late Saturday evening turned into early Sunday morning, Ritter concluded the night with a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Chelsea Hotel #2." Although lacking the fullness of a backing band as he had last year on tour, Ritter more than compensated with another fine gig.
Now with the "4 Songs Live" EP on tap for a Feb. 22 release and a new studio album being planned, Ritter returned to the Great White (and terribly frigid) North for a week's worth of late January and early February shows.
