 Brahms Cello Sonata
The cello (also violoncello or 'cello) is a stringed instrument and part of the violin family.
The Cello is much larger than a violin, and unlike that instrument, it is played in an upright position between the legs of the seatedmusician, resting on a metal spike, called the endpin.
Sonata (From Latin and Italian sonare, 'to sound'), in music, literallymeans a piece "played" as opposed to cantata (Latin cantare, to sing), a piecesung.

DEC 10 - Carter Brey, cello & Christopher O'Riley, piano : The La Jolla Music Society
First piano and then cello pick up and develop the main theme, a melody so lyric that it should remind listeners of a little known side of Rachmaninoff: he wrote nearly seventy songs.
Among his earliest works were the Romance in F Minor for cello and piano and Two Pieces for Cello and Piano, Opus 2, and to that combination he returned in his final chamber work, the Sonata for Piano and Cello in G Minor.
First was a Suite for Violin and Piano based on themes from the ballet, which he made in 1925.

 [No title]
The fourth movement of the sonata, the shortest of the five, is a droll, dissonant parody of a march in which the cello and piano move in lockstep toward a startling climax: a flourish of string harmonics, followed by several whistle-like chromatic slides at the top of the cello range.
The pattern will be repeated, the cello singing the melody solo, the piano responding with an echo, a variant or a long trill.
Shortly afterward, the piano responds with an echo of it.

Besides the ardent and highly disciplined playing of Truls Mork and his accomplices--notably the excellent pianist Havard Gimse, a Grieg specialist--there is the music: Grieg's chamber works are rarely given their due, but here are two of his finest in performances that are bound to make believers out of all but the most skeptical listeners.

Classical Net - Bridge - Cello Sonata
At the American premiere in 1923 the audience (including Artur Rubinstein and Hans Kindler) was captivated by the lyrical beauty of the work, a favorite of its composer which has remained the most widely performed of his duet pieces.
The contrasting second movement, first conceived as a slow movement followed by an independent finale, was compressed into an arch-shaped structure, incorporating a thematically derived scherzetto with the addition of an extended coda which refers to the work's opening.
(Some writers see reflections of Rachmaninoff in the first movement, and of Bax in the opening of the second.) The opening movement, begun in 1913, starts with a soaring cello line and continues with rolling periods of lyrical flights and accompaniment which adds richness and tension to the music's progress.
