 Shostakovich: Cello Concertos No.1 and 2 - A Good-Music-Guide Review
David Oistrakh performed the long-awaited premiere of the First Violin Concerto in October of 1955; Oistrakh would include the concerto in his tour of the US.
The climax of the third movement is a histrionic exaggeration of the insouciant tune from the second, and is as jarring and dramatic a 're-characterization' of an innocent-in-itself melody, as Shostakovich had accomplished with the march-tune whose gradually waxing variations interrupt the sonata-allegro design of the first movement of the 'Leningrad' Symphony.
Concerts of the Congress included Shostakovich's Fifth and Tenth Symphonies and the Violin Concerto.

DSCH 17 Shostakovich CD Reviews - Cello Concerto No. 1
The acoustic in the Weinberg concerto is less dramatic than the Shostakovich recording but is still sumptuous and warm.
Whereas the Shostakovich reading doesn't quite scale the heights of the best on offer, it is still a very solid performance, and as a package this CD presents a wonderful opportunity to explore Shostakovich's contemporaries and hear Shostakovich in a wider context of contemporary works.
While the Shostakovich is new to CD, these Weinberg and Levitin recordings appeared previously on Russian Disc (RDCD 10 071; deleted).

DSCH 10 Shostakovich CD Reviews - Symphony No. 12; Cello Concerto No. 2
The one grievance I would voice is that the orchestral image on the Chandos recording is a bit recessed, which is not the case with the more intimately recorded cello concerto.
This Chandos release has the distinction of coupling the two most enigmatic orchestral works in the Shostakovich canon: the Twelfth Symphony and the Second Cello Concerto.
The paper-mache prop that Shostakovich calls his Twelfth Symphony brings us to a musical mystery of a completely different sort.

Music under Soviet rule: CDs: Shostakovich Cello Cons.
That all of Shostakovich's music is, in a sense, vocal is nowhere plainer than in his cello concertos, where the sighs and curses of the soloist contrast with the harsh laughter and Bosch-like leers of the woodwind.
There are no tokens of insight here, such as, for example, Ivan Monighetti brings to the shudders of revulsion after the climax of the work's finale (9:45) in his Chant du Monde recording (LDC 278 1099).
It is certainly not by chance that shortly after the beginning we hear the strings playing the opening phrase of a well-known tune, 'Suliko' (E flat repeated, C, D flat, E flat), which gained notoreity from having been Stalin's favourite song.

The most recent release was recorded at our concert at St. Cyprian's Church on 15th May 2004, where we performed Shostakovich's 5th Symphony - possibly his most popular - and the 1st Cello Concerto was given a fine rendition by Jonathan Ayling of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
The recording was given a very creditable review in the November 2004 edition of BBC Music Magazine.

Classics Today.com - Your Online Guide to Classical Music
Yes, he skillfully navigates Shostakovich's fiercely challenging runs, wide intervals, and grinding portamentos, but he takes no risks, and there's little sense of the struggle or catharsis this music evokes as it spills over into the grotesque finale.
Even Valeri Polyansky, who in his previous Shostakovich symphony recordings for Chandos revealed no special flair for the composer, does a fairly decent job of conveying the concerto's gruff joviality interspersed with poignant melancholy.
However, he doesn't really explore the score's neurotic tension as does Rostropovich (for whom Shostakovich composed the concerto) in his inimitable recording with Eugene Ormandy (whose Philadelphia Orchestra easily outplays the Russian State Symphony).

INKPOT#62 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: SHOSTAKOVICH Cello Concertos. Kliegel/PRNSO/Wit (Naxos)
The end of the Concerto has the cello playing a sustained bowed note, over which little percussion figures are heard, which sounds childish but desolate at the same time.
Madness is not far here, and Shostakovich takes the listener through his own spirit, which refuses to be put down by his surroundings.
I still prefer Rostropovich's recordings, especially his 'live' 1961 recording with Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, in his recently re-issued "The Russian Years" series on EMI (The Cello Concertos come with recordings of the cello sonatas of Shostakovich, Kabalevsky and Khachaturian, all played to legendary effect by Rostropovich - EMI CZS 5 72295-2, 2 discs, budget-price!).
