 Carl Craig (1969 - )
Carl Craig is a Detroit-based producer of techno music, and is considered to be one of the most important names, in the Detroit second generation of techno producers and DJs.
Carl Craig was a key player in Detroit techno's second wave, following the futuristic lead of originators Derrick May and Juan Atkins, and eventually collaborating with May. He began recording at the turn of the '90s, using a number of aliases to release innovative ambient, techno, breakbeat and future jazz sounds.
Carl Craig has also created his own record label called "Planet e", which apart from his own work, has released records by well known techno and house artists like Kevin Saunderson, Alton Miller and Moodymann.

Craig helmed one in the series of DJ Kicks albums released by Studio !K7 and spent several months based in London.
On his return to the U.S., Craig released several R&S tracks on the Crackdown EP, recorded as Psyche for May's Transmat Records.
Few others have recorded so much quality music in such a variety of styles as has Craig, who jammed distorted beatbox samples into lo-fi electro riggings, crafted epic house tracks like his remix of Tori Amos' "God," and recorded the most sublime Detroit techno since godfathers Juan Atkins and Derrick May were at their peak.

Craig's music is released on his own label, Planet E (Earth) Communications, and his music is said to possess a timeless beauty.
The artist responsible for the album you are about to listen to, Carl Craig, is considered by some to be a genius.
In the course of one year, Matt went from a short order cook at Detroit's Russell Street Deli to one of the premier leftfield DJ/Producers in America, as well as a full-fledged touring member of the Innerzone Orchestra touring band.

 Carl Craig
Carl Craig finally recorded under his own name the album Landcruising (Planet E, 1995), and the effect was to distance himself from the dance floor.
This time Craig is truly conducting an orchestra, that includes seasoned programmers such as Richie Hawtin (Plastikman) and veteran jazz players such as Paul Randolph on bass, Craig Taborn on piano and jazz drummer Francisco Mora.
As Psyche, Craig released his first single, Elements (Transmat, 1989), and the seminal Crackdown (Transmat, 1989), later collected with other early tracks on Elements 1989-1990 (Planet E, 1996).

Craig's musicians then came back on-stage with the addition of a bass player for a rendition of a War (the band) song whose title I'm unsure of but where the MC kept chanting "Galaxy," which makes me think that that might indeed be the title of the song.
The "Bug In The Bassbin" release was great and the tracks he played at the concert were as well.
Clearly, what Craig is trying to accomplish with Innerzone Orchestra is going to be quite amazing, based on what I heard that night and what I have heard previously.

Metro Times Detroit - Musicians - : Carl Craig
Or Craig's status as dance music's underground hero, a name spoken of in hushed tones by listeners to all genres of music &; a producer who declares innovation and individualism as prerequisites for taking electronic music forward into the 21st century...
Sometimes all this can be a bit confusing, since Craig has adopted a series of multiple musical personalities – Paperclip People, Innerzone Orchestra, Psyche/BFC and 69 – relentlessly releasing timeless singles, EPs, and albums under these monikers.

Designer Music: The Remixes is an awkward compilation of Carl Craig's remixes of other musicians' material and as such showcases both his strengths and his indulgent arty weaknesses.
Craig takes Incognito's smooth, radio-friendly vocal jazz and transforms the band's oh-so sophisticated schlock into unadulterated techno soul.
Telex's abilities are so minuscule that Craig is left to extend the track by four minutes or so, plopping in some extra-spacy blurps and blops, and collect his large honorarium check.

In 1994 Carl released his signature nine-minute remix of Tori Amos' God, which opened up his work to a much broader audience and paved the way for the release of his Landcruising LP (Blanco y Negro), and re-releases of earlier 69 tracks on the LP Sound of Music (R & S).
Carl's contribution to the development of dance music for over a decade can't be underestimated, and the Detroit Experiment shows that there's plenty more great music to come from Mr Craig.
The Crackdown EP featured tracks recorded by Carl in Belgium, and after establishing Retroactive with Damon Booker in 1990 he recorded six more singles as BFC and Paperclip People in the basement of his parents' house.

By virtue of Craig's precise selecting skills, Onsumothasheeat desultorily skips over the big-room clichés that far too many DJs mix into their discs-- no "exclusive" (read: previously rejected) remixes of Moby's "Porcelain"; no grand-standing anthems to distract you.
Though he does toss in a couple of sub-par tracks, on balance Craig deserves loony praise, since Onsumothasheeat divines unsuspected depth and artistry within vague recesses of the Shadow.
Chief amongst these is Jamie Odell's Freerange label, a compilation of which Shadow recently released under the title Scrambled.
