Camper Van Beethoven - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Camper Van Beethoven was founded in 1983 in Santa Cruz, California as an alternative rock, new wave music, and punk rock group.
Allegedly recorded in 1987, it had all the same tracks as the Fleetwood Mac album of the same name, and a parody of the original album's cover art.
Camper Van Beethoven mixed elements of pop, ska, punk rock, folk, country, and acid rock into an eclectic, catchy formula years before the alternative rock movement took shape.

 Camper Van Beethoven MP3
All Camper has left of its glory days are two albums of excellent music left in print and a desire to release a new collection of live and previously unreleased tracks this March.
Camper Van Beethoven's music is the music of established artists and I can tell you, the tunes available here is better than what you can mine from the ten's of thousands of singles on MP3.com.
As for Camper Van Beethoven, you can download all their music for free at Pitch-a-Tent records web site.

 Metroactive Music Camper Van Beethoven
It was Lowery who got the Camper Van Beethoven reunion rolling when he invited Segel to play violin on Cracker's recording of "White Riot" for the 1999 Clash tribute album.
If you saw Camper play at its recent Warfield show with Cracker (the two bands share members), you know that, unlike most reunited bands, Camper sounds better than it ever did in its first incarnation, despite for the most part not having played the band's songs for over 10 years.
When those lines debuted on Camper Van Beethoven's first record in 1985, there was no way anyone could know they would also serve as the band's epitaph.

Camper Van Beethoven - Camper Van Beethoven is Dead, Long Live Camper Van Beethoven (Pitch-A-Tent)
The title of the album is quite appropriate, as it's the animated corpse of Camper Van Beethoven instead of the decaying carcass that most rarities collections are.
I've always felt that Camper Van Beethoven was one of the most underappreciated bands of the 1980's.
More than a collection of miscellaneous tracks, new songs were actually built from remnants of live tapes and unused studio bits, making Camper Van Beethoven is Dead essentially a new Camper Van Beethoven album (in the style of the Beatles "Free as a Bird").

 Camper Van Beethoven - 80sxchange.com
At the time of their 1985 debut, Camper Van Beethoven's merging of punk, folk, ska and world musics was truly a revelation.
The third album, confusingly titled Camper Van Beethoven, continued the thread, but the outstanding tracks, like "Joe Stalin's Cadillac," were all in the more straight-ahead indie-rock vein.
Camper Van Beethoven just released a box set of their first three or four CD's.

Camper Van Beethoven - PopMatters Concert Review
The album saw CVB moving away from foreign folk music and finally dealing directly with their own cultural legacy and American folk styles; using original lyrics instead of irreverent covers were now used to explore the heartland of American society.
What makes CVB so different to other bands who try to use humor in their music, (I'm pointing fingers at They Might Be Giants and Ween) is that CVB never set out to purposefully sound different just for the sake of it, their music isn't in the slightest bit contrived.
CVB's double CD release of Tusk is their ultimate satire of everything that went wrong with rock in the '70s.

 Camper van Beethoven Biography
The quintet effortlessly combined an iconoclastic, irony-laced lyrical stance with a free-spirited eclecticism that encompassed a dizzying array of stylistic influences, from punk to folk to psychedelia to all manner of world music.
In the second half of the 1980s, Camper Van BeethovenóDavid Lowery (vocals, guitar), Victor Krummenacher (bass, vocals), Greg Lisher (guitar), Jonathan Segel (violin, guitar, keyboards) and Chris Pedersen (drums), plus late addition David Immergl¸ck (guitar and various stringed instruments)ówas one of its era's most original and influential indie rock bands.

Camper Van Beethoven: Cigarettes & Carrot Juice: The Santa Cruz Years: Pitchfork Review
CVB turned up the treble for their self-titled third album, opening with the band's most beloved and accessible anthem, "Good Guys and Bad Guys", indie rock's very own "Hotel California".
Camper Van Beethoven's hyperactivity ensured a wealth of rarities for fans to track down at record conventions: we've seen two posthumous compilations of this material, in addition to the recent discovery of their long-lost 1987 tribute to Fleetwood Mac's Tusk.
Following Camper Van Beethoven, the band hit some bumps.

Camper Van Beethoven: Cigarettes and Carrot Juice: The Santa Cruz Years - PopMatters Music Review
In five discs, the case for Camper Van Beethoven is made without apology or plea; it's simply a collection of albums that are hard to find now, but were and still are a testament to just how far rock music could be taken without shattering.
Camper Van continued to poke a stick into the snarling caged animal of punk with songs like "Cowboys From Hollywood", "(Don't You Go to) Goleta", "No More Bullshit", and "Joe Stalin's Cadillac".
Despite the fact that CVB's songs seemed to be making fun of the pretensions of the underground rock scene, particularly punk, they also seemed to embrace it, working from within to expose its inner lunacy.

Camper Van Beethoven - Epitonic.com: Hi Quality Free and Legal MP3 Music
Camper Van Beethoven was a band that inspired fanatical devotion.
The featured song is a live orchestral version of "All Her Favorite Fruit." The original version of the song appeared on CVB's final album, Key Lime Pie (Virgin Records, 1989).
Whatever it was, after 1990, many fans feared that they had heard the last original songs from their favorite band.

Weekend: Camper Van Beethoven hooks up with fans
Camper Van Beethoven fans were delighted when the band's original members reunited in 2002 for a brief tour.
The album is filled with the same kind of nutty innovations that made Camper Van Beethoven, led by the fearless David Lowery (late of Cracker), a favorite of the underground alt-rock set the first time around.
This is all told, of course, with Camper Van panache: crazy Lowery lyrics, lots of violin, a poignant homage to minimalist composer Steve Reich (Come Out), even a Twin Peaks reference (That Gum You Like Is Back In Style).

 Fredericksburg.com - Beethoven back together
With its confidence intact, CVB will appear at the 9:30 Club in Washington next Tuesday, which is the same day the band's new album is released.
CVB violinist Jona-than Segel played on a Cracker track, and bassist Victor Krummenacher began subbing for Cracker's bass player--he now plays for both bands.
Once an important part of the mid-80s indie-rock scene, Camper Van Beethoven is back with a new album.

 Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker/MOD
This is an EP that later ended up forming part of a compilation album (the 1993 rarities collection Camper Vantiquities) and also was appended to a CD version of Camper Van Beethoven.
CVB made no effort to sing seriously, wrote goofy lyrics filled with self-referential puns, and looked for inspiration to eclectic sources like Eastern European folk music.
Camper Van Beethoven - Formed 1983 with Anthony Guess (drums), Victor Krummenacher (bass), Greg Lisher (guitar), David Lowery (guitar, lead vocals), Chris Molla (guitar, pedal steel guitar), Jonathan Segel (violin, keyboards, mandolin, viola, sitar, etc.).

RollingStone.com: Camper Van Beethoven : "New Times" for Camper : News
The instrumentation -- typical rock anchors augmented with violin, accordion and mandolin -- still pops with the energy and precision a joyous punk string band.
Given the spartan sound of Camper's earliest records, New Roman Times immediately sounds better than any other of the band's five studio recordings.
But frontman David Lowery said two years ago that Camper -- Jonathan Segel (violin), Victor Krummenacher (bass), Greg Lisher (guitar) and Chris Pederson (drums) -- would only return to the studio if they found themselves with a cracking set of new songs.

Music Preview: Camper Van Beethoven is happier live
Camper's way of fusing various cultures -- propelled by Jonathan Segel's unorthodox style on violin, keyboards and mandolin -- was never done with any shred of authenticity, making it a perfect match for Lowery's surreal wit.
Now, Camper is doing a full-fledged tour for what is looking more like a full-fledged reunion, playing songs that gleefully defy the aging process.
A few years ago, the members converged for concerts that combined Camper with Cracker, the more straight-ahead band that frontman David Lowery went on to create.

 riverfronttimes.com Music Beethoven's Second 2004-10-27
As Segel says, "It may be a concept record, but all the songs can actually be taken by themselves." In fact, the songs, individually and collectively, are the strongest that Camper Van Beethoven has recorded.
According to Segel, the crowds on Camper Van Beethoven's current tour reflect this gap in the historical record.
By the mid-'90s, their early work was mostly out of print, and for a new generation of listeners they were known as "Cracker lead singer David Lowery's old band" -- if they were known at all.

 Pollstar -- The Concert Hotwire
The band quietly re-formed, playing with Cracker and getting rave reviews, but the band didn't want to announce a "comeback" until a new album was released.
Lowery said CVB's hiatus was the best career move the band made because it sold most of its records during the break.
According to Lowery, this is the real deal; CVB is not putting out a "bad reunion record" as an excuse to tour.

Camper Van Beethoven: Camper Van Beethoven Is Dead, Long Live Camper Van Beethoven: Pitchfork Review
Now, more than ten years after Camper Van Beethoven's demise, Lowery and cohorts Victor Krummenacher and Jonathan Segel have decided to release, through Lowery's own Pitch-a-Tent Records, an album of outtakes, live performances, demos and rarities.
Other highlights are the possibly partly maybe new "Klondike", which features a sample of the violin melody from Camper's own "The Fool" and an orchestral version of what is, quite simply, one of the finest songs ever put to record, "All Her Favorite Fruit" from 1989's Key Lime Pie.
The idea, evidently, was to release an album of "leftovers" that didn't sound like one.

Splendid E-zine reviews: Camper Van Beethoven
I encourage you to buy a few Camper van Beethoven albums.
Funny thing about music: if you leave it sit for long enough, it starts to ferment.
It's a little bit of everything -- an orchestral take on "All Her Favorite Fruit," an idiosyncratic array of cover tunes condensed into "S.P. 37957 Medley", skewed pop gems like "Tom Flower's 1500 Valves" and "We're All Wasted and We're Wasting All Your Time".

Epitonic Message Board - Camper Van Beethoven
Thanks to the miracles of modern technology, a new Camper Van Beethoven album is available years after the band's demise.
The album, comprised of live tracks, outtakes, and studio noodling documents the genre-bending songwriting (and knob-twiddling) skill of an independent band that was years ahead of its time.
The amazing artist Steve Keene, best known for his album art for Pavement, Apples In Stereo and more, has recently rendered his version of Camper Van Beethoven's album "Telephone Free Landslide Victory"...and it's available for auction on eBay!

Around this time Chris Molla (for the previous year an on-again-off again member) left in the middle of a tour and was never invited back to perform or record with the band.
Following the third album’s critical acclaim, and national tours with bands such as R.E.M. and 10,000 Maniacs, Camper Van Beethoven signed to Virgin Records and released their major label debut, "Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart" (1988) and their final release "Key Lime Pie" (1989).
The addition of Segel on violins, keyboards and mandolin gave the band their unique sound.

Camper Van Beethoven: New Roman Times: Pitchfork Review
So despite the fact that their best albums-- particularly 1988's Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart-- hold up as well as nearly anything from the era, the bottom line is that Camper Van Beethoven entered the new century with much of their music out of print and their reputation in desperate need of rehabilitation.
The track would be completely unrecognizable as CVB if not for Segel's distinctive fiddle above the din.
When this unpleasantness is followed by the bland Crackerisms of "51-7" and the ridiculous FM power chording of "White Fluffy Clouds", you'd be forgiven for thinking that maybe this reunion wasn't such a hot idea after all.

RollingStone.com: New Roman Times : Camper Van Beethoven : Review
Like the Mekons, who also filled their lefty songs with humor, warmth and ace fiddling, the Campers know that while nuance may not always be as useful as righteous anger in the real world, it often yields better music.
New Roman Times, Camper Van Beethoven's first studio album in fifteen years, finds the Cali sextet charging through gypsy jams, psych-rock and scary-funny folk songs as it documents a parallel-reality America full of civil war, right-wing assholes, suicide bombers and burnouts getting loopy on narcotic flowers.
The songs are hit-and-miss, but the band scores on cuts such as "Might Makes Right," where the dense instrumental grooves enhance the track's cautionary surrealism.

Fifteen years after disbanding, Camper Van Beethoven — those arch-ironists of the late '80s — are back with a new album, New Roman Times.

What the concept does allow is a number of narrative voices to be heard, a complement to the diverse musical styles present on the album.

 Camper Van Beethoven Reviews
Before Camper Van Beethoven, no "punk" band would've thought to blend Eastern European folk rhythms with Tex-Mex, ska, reggae, psych-rock, punk-rock, pop-rock and...well, whatever else was out there.
This five-disc box set features all the early CVB albums on compact disc.
Also in the box is the Vantiquities collection of various 1980s recordings, originally released in 1993 after their two-record stint with Virgin Records and a live collection, Greatest Hits Played Faster, which opens with a magisterial "All Her Favorite Fruit" and ends, appropriately, with a sad-sounding "One of These Days." --Lorry Fleming

The Campers were a fun little band and a barrel of monkeys, but they never really delivered a consistently satisfying album - with one exception.
The lone Camper Van Beethoven album I don't own, I keep looking for this but never see it around.
The stroke is a version of Ringo Starr's "Photograph" that is better than the original (the Campers don't bog it down with overorchestrated strings).

Anyhow, skipping forwards to 2002, the main members of CVB have all guested with Cracker at various points, and they record a complete album remake of Fleetwood Mac's TUSK, which is given a "cover story" that it was recorded while the band was bored in the studio working on one their first Virgin LP.
DISCO CVB is a mix of new stuff and classics recorded live last October in Chicago at the Metro.
Listening closely though, you can tell that it was not really recorded in the 1980's.

He’s reactivated his indie label Pitch-a-Tent, whose releases include the unorthodox 1999 compilation CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN IS DEAD, as well as LONG LIVE CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN, for which Lowery reunited in the studio with his former band mates to augment and manipulate some unreleased vintage Camper recordings.
The band has been joined on stage by the likes of Joan Osborne, Steve Wynn and Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz, and was recently augmented on tour by Lowery’s former Camper Van Beethoven band mates.
In this case, the album’s cast includes the aforementioned Mark Linkous as well as Lowery’s old Camper Van Beethoven band mate Victor Krummenacher.

 According to Lowery
Designer and musician Bruce Licher's affiliation with Cracker goes back to the Camper Van Beethoven days, when Licher's Independent Projects Records released early Camper with the distinctive look and feel that has become IPR's signature.
Licher's recent work includes the striking packaging for the debut album of his instrumental ensemble, Scenic, called 'Incident at Cima.' "The natural world inspired the music," says Licher, now a Sedona, Arizona resident.
I thought, 'this is kinda weird stuff, but it didn't seem like anything I could work with." Camper regrouped and recorded another tape and addressed it to IPR.

The stylistic eclecticism that characterized those albums is in full force here with rock ("The Long Plastic Hallway"), Balkan dance ("Sons of the New Golden West"), country ("Militia Song"), experimental prog-rock noise ("White Fluffy Clouds"), even disco ("Discotheque CVB").
