Topic: Bukka White

Bukka White, Mississippi blues musician, born Booker T. Washington White
White's musical breakthrough came around 1930 when Ralph Lembo, an agent for the Victor recording label, sent White to record some of his songs in Memphis (Eley and Historical Tour).
Even though he is not Elvis Presley or B.B. King, Bukka White has contributed greatly to the history of Mississippi music.
Bukka is released from prison and records twelve numbers for Vocalion Records in Chicago

 Bukka White
Bukka's first recordings were14 songs done in Memphis in May 1930.
One of those songs, The Panama Limited was a featured part of Bukka's repetoire until his death and is is probably one of the best "train" songs ever recorded.
While Shake Em' On Down was a hit when released on the Vocalion label, Bukka was doing time on Parchman Farm in Mississippi.

 BUKKA WHITE
Bukka White showed up with a sheaf of songs which were revamps of current blues hits.
Bukka's first released recording, however, was religious and advertised in 1930 as
ing White's release for the session, but it seems curious he went to such trouble for only two songs.

 Bukka White
Blues purists will tell you that nothing Bukka White recorded after 1940 is ultimately worth listening to.
White's tastes had grown with the times, and he would have loved to have played an electric guitar and fronted a band, as his old acquaintance Chester Burnett (aka Howlin' Wolf) and Bukka's own cousin, B. King, had been already doing successfully for years.
Bob Dylan recorded "Fixin' to Die Blues" on his 1961 debut Columbia album, and at the time no one in the music business knew who Bukka White was — most figured a fellow who'd written a song like "Fixin' to Die" had to be dead already.

Bukka got hold of a makeshift guitar and in the evenings, after working long days in the fields, he played music; however, his uncle broke this guitar because he kept being awakened by Bukka's late playing.
Bukka was more careful with his next guitar.
Bukka recorded for Vocalion immediately after his release.

Bukka White was not a man to trifle with.
I sit and listen to tapes of those days and marvel at what he did.
He was introduced as the "Master of the National Steel Guitar" and he made it ring like a bell.

 Bukka White biography - theiceberg.com
White learned guitar and piano in his teens, and hoboed from 1921, playing blues with artists such as George "Bullet" Williams.
Rediscovered by John Fahey in 1963, White had retained most of his abilities, and was extensively recorded (including, for the first time, on piano).
Returning to Vocalion Records in 1937, he recorded his composition "Shake 'Em On Down" and was given the misspelt billing which he always disliked.

 Bukka White
After shooting a jealous husband at a dance in Prairie in 1937, Bukka is sent to Parchman Farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary, while in prison he gets a visit from Alan Lomax of the Library of Congress Archive of Folk Song in 1939, and he records Bukka playing 'Poor Boy' and 'Sic 'Em Dogs On'.
After his release from Parchman Farm in 1940, he records a series of songs for Vocalion, then he joins the Navy in 1942, but leave in 1944 and settles in Memphis.
Having been spotted in 1930 by talent scout Ralph Lembo, Bukka accompanied by Napoleon Hairiston, records 14 sides for the Victor label.

Trail of the Hellhound: Bukka White
Upon his release from prison in 1940, White traveled to Chicago for a follow-up session to "Shake ‘Em On Down." The resulting twelve songs transcend blues as music, becoming powerful ruminations on imprisonment, isolation, loneliness, Jim Crow justice, and the freedom of the rails.
During a 1930 stay in Memphis, White recorded fourteen songs, including three gospel numbers with Memphis Minnie supplying background vocals.
Before beginning his sentence, he recorded two blues for the Vocalion label, including "Shake ‘Em On Down," which sold in excess of 16,000 copies.

 Bukka White
Washington "Bukka" White were giant figures in the annals of American music.
Both were passionate purveyors of their native Mississippi delta music and of slide guitar.
The following quote places him in a musical and cultural context:

Furry Lewis with Bukka White and Gus Cannon CD Review
There are five Furry Lewis tracks, three from Bukka White, and two from Gus Cannon (including "Goin' Back (to Memphis, TN)" which was not on the original release).
The overall feel of the album, with the various interjections and other asides, suggests that the protagonists were very much at ease.

Amazon.com: Music: The Complete Bukka White
His raspy/quavery vocals are a perfect accompaniment to his chugging guitar style, and White is backed up on most of these songs, recorded mainly in 1940, by Washboard Sam, who provides strong rhythmic counterpoint to the sound White gets from his National steel guitar.
Although I like all the tracks on this CD, "Parchman Farm Blues", the first Bukka White song I ever heard, is still my favorite.
If you mainly enjoy the blues for guitar solos then Bukka isn't your man (because he doesn't solo often, at least not on this cd), but if you enjoy engaging stories and a thumping rhythmic attack, then he is indeed your man. Seriously, Bukka can make you get up and dance around the room.

Blues Lyrics On Line: BUKKA WHITE
Bukka White had a raw, rasp-like singing voice which, along with his driven delivery and guitar playing, lent many of his songs a special, almost hypnotic atmosphere.
In 1940 he was released, and returned to Chicago where he recorded a further twelve songs with Washboard Sam.
These are collected on the CD "The Complete Bukka White" in the Roots 'n' Blues series.

They show the Beatles from before their first record right through all the years of Beatlemania from a viewpoint far closer to the group than any other's.
They combined the iconoclasm of the Sex Pistols with the swaggering gang mentality of Exile on Main Street-period Rolling Stones: glaring menacingly in combat fatigues while tearing through tunes that mainstream pop bands would kill for.

Movie Reviews For Son House & Bukka White - Masters of the Country Blues - DVD Advice
Son House and Bukka White perform before a live Seattle studio audience.
Yet it is hard for me to understand the music, being a white man in another world from House, separated in this regard but united as men.
All this I gathered from his monologues but I don't want to take away from the pure simplicity of Son House's music.

Bukka White's powerful pre-war recordings inspired a posse of blues fans to search the South for him.
Unlike some of his contemporaries, Bukka was thrilled to be "rediscovered," since his passion for music had never diminished.
With pure enthusiasm for life, Booker (as he preferred to be called) made the most of the 60's, introducing young audiences to the thundering, primal sound of World Boogie.

 George Winston FAQs
He started his own label, Takoma Records, in 1958 to record his unique solo guitar compositions, which was unheard of at the time.
He was also instrumental in locating many old recordings of these great musicians for re-issue so we could all be inspired by them, especially those of great Mississippi bluesman Charley Patton, the main inspiration for Robert Johnson.
His other great contributions include locating some of the great pre-war country blues guitarists from the South, such as Bukka White (Parchment Farm), Robert Pete Williams and Skip James (I'm So Glad).

 Bukka White
Bukka White was one of those remarkable artists with an overall approach and composition style that were unusual, yet he was a popular houseparty musician and a successful recording artist.
Achieving a distinctive musical voice is a highly prized blues value, yet few artists develop an easily recognizable vocal and instrumental style that is uniquely theirs.
