Buckwheat asserts his intention to start his own band was to stay true to the cultural music roots of his Zydeco music.
Zydeco music is a hybrid genre combining Afro-Carribbean rhythm and blues with influences from rock, soul, country and the French-inspired cajun' music of southwestern Louisiana.

He soon signed to Island Records, the first zydeco act on a major label, and released On a Night Like This, critically acclaimed album that was nominated for a Grammy as well.
He set out on his own with The Ils Sont Partis Band; they debuted with One for the Road in 1979 (1979 in music) and were nominated for a Grammy for Turning Point and Waitin' for My Ya Ya (1985 in music) after switching to the Rounder record label.

Buckwheat Zydeco scored legions of fans throughout the South in the 1980s, but music journalist Ted Fox (an editor at Audio magazine and author of "In the Groove" and "Showtime at the Apollo") helped move the group to the next level.
That day, the world's premier zydeco band reissued its 1997 album, "Trouble," on its own fledgling label, Tomorrow Recordings, but the occasion was tempered with the news a day earlier that Dural will undergo surgery Jan. 19 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville to remove lesions on his vocal cords.
Their debut Island album, the Grammy-nominated "On a Night Like This," was named one of 1987's 10 best albums by the New York Times.

 Buckwheat Zydeco
The Zydeco flavor of music that comes from the southern part of the U.S. has some similarities to Cajun music, and seems to have mixed in a bunch of French, Cajun, and blues.
One can be sure that the "Zydeco" part of Buckwheat's name came from the type of Louisiana music that he is known for.
They played 2 sets of about 45 minutes, took a 20 minute intermission in between.
