Sometimes song deconstructions can take on a life of their own and offer radical, eye-opening reinterpretations of the original music; I really don't think this was one of those great events.

 Brazilian Music: Roots 1
Gabriel Soares de Sousa, a Portuguese colonist and chronicler, described in his 1587 treatise called Tratado Descritivo do Brasil the songs, dances and musical instruments of several tribes.
Over the centuries, simple folk, Jesuits and noblemen brought with them traditional dances and dramatic dances like the Bumba-meu-boi, lullabies and nursery rhymes, poetical and lyrical forms, and almost all of the basic musical instruments we hear in Brazil today: flute, clarinet, cavaquinho, guitar, piano, violin, cello, accordion and the tambourine.
With the lundus and modinhas (sentimental songs) composed by Domingos Caldas Barbosa (1739-1800) we have the first documented popular music of Brazil.

The author is a radio producer and music reviewer from São Paulo.

Bossa Nova is a soft, sophisticated vocal music for listening or instrumental improvisation, decidedly not dance music.
Chico Buarque is a singer, songwriter, and whose music is very samba-influenced.

Brazilian music has been far from my mind lately.
The best popular music of the these times is being made beyond the earshot of even those who clamor for it.
But Memorável Samba by Marcos Sacramento is in all the stores—or should be, if they sell discs for the sake of the music.
