Brandenburg concertos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This concerto was written for flute, violin, and harpsichord, with violin, viola, and basso continuo support.
Here, the violin solo part is played by the harpsichord, while the two flutes or recorders have the same music (albeit transposed down a tone) as in the Brandenburg.
An excerpt of the Second Concerto was placed upon the Voyager Golden Record on the Voyager spacecraft, and the Third Concerto was used as the original theme of the BBC programme "The Antiques Roadshow".

A number of jazz musicians have actually used one of the Brandenburgs as the basis for a jazz performance, and they work surprisingly well.
One of the featured recordings was one of the Brandenburg Concerti, prompting a commentator to wryly observe that was dirty pool--it would be giving aliens an unrealistically good first impression of human culture.

Although, as the notes say, the solo violin has the more demanding part, while the two recorders' are much simpler, the balance maintained throughout the CDs never emphasize one over another - everything fits nicely into the sound picture.
This is simply the liveliest, most spontaneous, most surprisingly enjoyable performance of the Brandenburgs I have ever heard.
In fact, listening to these performances treats you to the incredible skill of these musicians as they pull off the most daunting whirlwind passages with a combination of risk-taking bravery and steadfast ease.

I LOVE listening to the Brandenburg concerti and other Baroque music.
The Brandenburg has a concert G and the Haydn has a concert A (one half step below the grand and glorious double C).
But put in the context of other eras of classical music, Baroque music lacks the emotional power that Romantic era is known for.

 BBC - h2g2 - J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerti
The Brandenburg Concerti are six pieces of music written by Johann Sebastian Bach.
We think of a concerto as a piece of music for a solo instrument and accompaniment (usually an orchestra) in three movements.
They are played by a small group of musicians, usually a chamber orchestra — although in Bach’s day there was no difference between a chamber orchestra and any other sort of orchestra.

The new princess was uninterested in music, and indeed, managed to destroy the rapport between Bach and Prince Leopold.
They were lumped instead into a miscellany of musical works and valued at four groschen apiece, for the purpose of evaluating and dividing the Margrave's estate among his five heirs.
It also displays a mix of both the traditional grosso and solo elements of the evolving concerto - the violin and two recorders used together in concertino fashion, as well as each instrument individually.

Brandenburg Concerto No.3 in G Major, BWV1042, is an orchestral work for three groups of strings: three violins, three violas, and three cellos (with basso continuo accompaniment).
Brandenburg Concerto No.4 features two solo flutes (originally recorders) and a solo violin.
The dialogue between the solo instruments is fairly even in the Andante, but the solo violin is clearly the "hero" in the outer movements.

The opening of Sunday’s concert (Brandenburg Concerto No. 3) immediately recalled a stereotypical “NY style” of string playing which suggests playing this type of music in the upper half of the bow and with the bow almost always on the string.

Several of the Brandenburg Concerti of Johann Sebastian Bach also loosely follow the concerto grosso form, notably the 2nd Concerto, which has a concertino of recorder, piccolo trumpet, oboe, and solo violin.
Corelli's concertino consisted of two violins and a cello, with a string orchestra serving as ripieno, both accompanied by a basso continuo.
In Corelli's day, two distinct forms of the concerto grosso were distinguished: the concerto da chiesa (church concert) and the concerto da camera (chamber concert).

The Experiments in Musical Intelligence Bach Brandenburg Concerto (2000) is based on the six Bach Brandenburg Concerti as well as certain similar movements from Bach& orchestral suites (used to increase the size of the database).
The first movement is somewhat unusual in that none of the actual Brandenburg Concerti begin in minor—this, no doubt an influence of either another movement in the concerti or a movement of the orchestral suites.
They also represent ‘firsts’ in that no other machine-composed concerti or suites in the style of Bach have ever been created or performed previously.

Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti did not require a full orchestrated sound, thus focussing on small ensemble playing and the featuring of soloists like Nora Shulman and Julie Ranti, flute, Richard Dorsey, oboe, Barton Woomert, trumpet, and Israelivich himself as violin soloist.
And even though there are no historical notes on the concerts other than that they were ordered by an aristocrat who collected concerti, but never had these performed, we know by similar Italian examples that the performing was to have a light and translucent quality.
This was admiringly well achieved by Israelivich’s choices.
