Boy soprano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Boy soprano (or treble in British English; see below) is a term applied in music to a young male singer with an unchanged voice in the soprano range.
The use of boy sopranos (and boy altos) in Christian liturgical music can be traced back to pre-Christian times.
As a boy singer approaches and begins to undergo puberty, the quality of his voice increasingly distinguishes itself from that typical of girls.

The Better Land - Volume 1
This CD is probably unique in not only making these recordings available for the first time since the 1940s, but also in bringing the recordings of several boys together under one title for the first time ever in recording history.
We hope this CD will be warmly received, and we offer it not only to the general public but also to the present generation of choir trainers in whose hands the future of our musical tradition rests.
The sheer numbers of boys singing in choirs in those days (sixty boys at Marylebone Parish Church for instance, and large choirs in working class districts) would certainly throw up outstanding soloists.

 The Better Land
One recently-retired Director of Music said to me: 'I have spent my entire career trying to get rid of that boy soprano sound, and you want to bring it back!' It was his opinion that the modern sound produced by boys (from the chest, and naturally fading quickly at puberty) was the correct Chorister Sound.
I have noticed that it is now rare to see boys older than fourteen singing in choirs these days, but I doubt that it has anything to do with the earlier breaking of the voice.
But it has always been my experience as a choirmaster that boys actually prefer singing these songs of the past if they are give the chance to experience them.

Christmas 1949 was a busy time and he broadcast from the Ritz Belfast on December 20th with Norman Hawkins, baritone, Eddie Pearl at the piano, the Ulster Singers, directed by John Vine, and Joseph Seal at the organ.

As for using a boy soprano, as Mahler intended to signify innocence and childlike quality, I find it favorable for Helmut Wittek to sing the "descripton of heaven", even though I still prefer Reri Grist's more moving and sweet voice as recorded in the previous one.
He seems to have really discovered the secret of the music's essential innocence, and he now knows exactly when to make a point and when to just let the music speak naturally.
Also the tempo was slightly calmer and slower, "without haste", compared to the Sony recording with the New York Phil.

boys choir costumes : history castriati
If a boy showed an unusual degree of musical aptitude within the order, castration and further musical training was always an option, and had the potential of dramatically improving a family's economic situation if their son happened to become a successful singer.
As religious music became more complex and demanding, the advantage of castrati was that they could sing naturally in the range of a boy soprano with the power and stamina of a man.
In the Middle Ages, the lack of female voices in the relatively simple church music such as the Gregorian chant, was not a problem.

Both recordings feature these essential choral pieces in performances that are as faithfully and fully realized as we can hope for (accompanied works are given in their versions with organ), from the bright and brilliant Coronation Te Deum to the sturdy and reassuring anthem Set me as a seal upon thine heart.
Yes, the vocal timbres show the natural and distinct contrasts of quality most apparent in the voices of boy trebles versus mature female sopranos--but even here, Walton's music loses nothing in its impact due to the less-weighty boy soprano sound.
Not surprisingly, each of the two choirs sings as if born to this music, and technically there's very little difference between the adult professionals and the men and boys of St. John's.
