Borknagar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The next Borknagar album will be "an acoustic effort based entirely on the epic and progressive aspect of the band", according to mainman Øystein G. Brun's statement on blabbermouth.net[1].
Their self-titled debut album features lyrics in Norwegian; all subsequent albums have featured lyrics written in English by both ICS Vortex from Arcturus and Dimmu Borgir and later by current singer, Vintersorg from Otyg and his eponymous band.
Borknagar rose out of the ashes of the Norwegian death metal band Molested when then-member Øystein Brun became tired of the brutal aspects of the band's music.

Borknagar have perhaps never been viking metal persay (they were more of an inventive black metal band), but with lyrics speaking of ancient times when Odin and his men ruled the world of mortals it still qualifyes in my eyes (ears).
Borknagar is an everchanging entity and that is what makes them and their music so appealing.
With this album Borknagar also took a step further away from their previous pagan "image" and adapted a more futuristic outlook lyrically.

Borknagar is one of the few current metal bands that has still retained my attention with their music.
Borknagar, even in its first incarnation, was quite capable and this debut album shows a lot of excellent music.
Borknagar is yet another one of those bands playing an epic sort of metal influenced by black metal and whatever it was that got into Opeth's drinking water.

 Borknagar - Empiricism - review @ Tartareandesire.com
Borknagar is one of the most successful of the Norwegian black metal bands and even though the band was formed as late as 1996 they have now released no less than five full-length albums.
This time Borknagar chose to record the album in Norway together with Borge Finstad, resulting in experimentation with a hammond organ, grand piano and authentic strings.
This indicates that they are a very professional and hard working group of people which stands even more clear after listening to one of their albums.

Borknagar was founded in 1995 by guitarist Oystein Brun, who, fresh from his stint in a previous band called Molested, decided to form a new black metal project, enlisting several major players in the scene.
The new album, Epic, was released in June 2004.
Despite frequent lineup changes, Borknagar's music remains of high quality -- this is one of the better modern post-black metal bands in the scene today.

But even a bad Borknagar album (and this is certainly not "bad") is better than a good album by most other metal bands.
Borknagar is a band that most people already know if they love or hate, and "Epic" is not different enough from previous releases to shatter the expectations of long-time fans or woo new ones to the fold.
With every other Borknagar album, a new group of people came together to interpret Øystein Brun's vision of "the yearning moods that entertain fantasy, and call revelations in our minds concerning the ancient past," as was set forth in the band's eponymous debut.

Borknagar is about passion and the unveiling of emotions one song at a time.
Sure Borknagar's third release _The Archaic Course_ has been out for a long time now, but its powerful array of melody and harsh realms of blackened metal, doused in hard rock sensibility, surely still ignites the passion within all those who still have it in their CD player.
One thing that truly stands out from Borknagar -- at least with this release -- is their unique way of working the ways of metal music.

In this first album Borknagar were Oystein G. Brun, Garm, Grim, Infernus and Ivar Bjørnson, and this is a hell of an album, in a nutshell.
However, I don´t think that these tracks fit very well in the concept of the album, since the overall sensation is fast and unbridled metal woven through pounding blastbeats, icy melodies and epic choruses.
As one can imagine, lyrics are in Norwegian, something that Borknagar changed with subsequent releases in the typical shift to English that most bands unfortunately used to do.

On the eve of the release of the new Borknagar album, Quintessence, Jens called the Metal Pages on his cell-phone (which died part-way through the interview) to talk about the new album, life in Borknagar, and whatever else happened to come up.
After listening to Quintessence MANY times, I have to say that it is definitely an excellent album, well worthy of the Borknagar name.
Jens: I don't think it's going to be too different, it's still two guitars and all the same stuff, so, he's going to contribute to a bigger sound, and you're going to hear all the melody lines that the keyboard does on the album.

Skinny's Music :: Borknagar "Epic" Review
Borknagar, like Opeth and Dimmu Borgir typify the use of the term ‘progressive black metal’ in the best possible sense by taking the music where it naturally flows without making it sound forced or unnatural.
Like any Borknagar album, time is needed to fully grasp the depth of both the individual songs and the entire album’s concept, and the appropriately named ‘Epic’ really is no different.
The black metal approach to ‘Traveller’ is given a slight twist with the use of folk keyboards at the beginning before being overwhelmed with Borknagar’s trademark melodic chorus, while ‘Origin’ breaks into a beautiful Opeth like acoustic/heavier guitar with subtle voice over like chants towards the end.

Then, another year later, The Archaic Course showed some signs of wear, many of Borknagar's contemporaries catching up with their progression in the between-album interim, but the album was solid nonetheless, especially when taking into consideration who was sponging whose moves.
A year later, The Olden Domain, the band's apex, blew copious amounts of fresh air into a black-metal scene blanketed in a stale cloud, thereby establishing Borknagar as purveyors of a grandly epic, dynamic and, most importantly, unique strain of true black metal.
Yes, Borknagar, after losing their previous rhythm section (sadly, former drummer Grim committed suicide last year), have either run out of fresh ideas or, more likely, everyone else has not only caught up with the band but has surpassed them -- it's utterly baffling, to say the least.
