Over the course of six albums, the Rats were changelings, morphing from a punk band with Springsteen tendencies into a musically ambitious pop group, then embracing world beat before finally retrenching, settling into dull mainstream rock.
One of the earliest English punk releases was the Boomtown Rats' "Looking Out For No. 1" (1976), a herky-jerky, ironic ode to the Me Decade.

Looked upon by the scribes who write our pop and rock history as a bunch of punk light weights, the Boomtown Rats are not loved and revered as frequently as their musical contemporaries The Pistols, The Jam, The Clash.
The fact that the Rats were originally called The Nitelife Thugs may provide a clue to much of the content of that first album, loaded as it is with grimly picaresque urban fables of alienation and violence.

Anyone who heard the Boomtown Rats' debut single, "Lookin' After No. 1," with its rapid drum beat, slashing guitars, and aggressive singing about impatience with the dole queue, would think of the group as a particularly tight, standard punk rock band on the London scene in 1977.
Overall, there were enough power chords and snotty sentiments to justify the punk tag, but it was already clear that the Rats aspired to the mainstream.

Their 1978 single Rat Trap and 1979's I Don't Like Mondays both charted at #1 (I Don't Like Mondays would become a controversial minor U.S. hit as the song was somewhat based on an incident involving the sensless random shooting of a 17 year old girl in San Diego California).
They released their first single, Looking After No.1, in the summer of '77 which would chart at #11, eventually becoming the first punk record to be playlisted by the BBC.
Geldof and The Boomtown Rats would play host to 1985's Live Aid which included performances by David Bowie, U2, Duran Duran, Led Zeppelin (with Phil Collins and Tony Thompson on drums), Queen and Madonna - to name a few, with all proceeds going to world hunger.

It is almost inconceivable to think that the Boomtown Rats were considered "punks" (presumably because of the "rats" bit), because NONE of this album is punk with the honourable exception of "Lookin' After No. 1".
The Boomtown Rats were guilty of producing so much influence-laden music that no-one ever really knew who, or what they were, or wanted to be.
Whilst it reveals the influence of such as Bruce Springsteen, the Rats showed that they were more than imitators, delivering their own back to grass roots approach, mostly through Saint Bob's lyrics.
