Bob Crosby - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His most famous band was the Bobcats, who were a Dixieland jazz group from within the Bob Crosby Orchestra.
Both the Bob Crosby Orchestra (big band) and the "Bobcats" small-group specialized in "dixieland" jazz, presaging the traditional jazz "revival" of the 1940's.
Among his hits included "Summertime" (theme song), "In A Little Gypsy Tea Room," "Whispers In The Dark," "South Rampart Street Parade," "March Of Teh Bobcats," "Day In, Day Out," "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby," "Dolores" and "New San Antonio Rose" (last three with Bing Crosby), among others.

 Solid! -- Bob Crosby
The Bob Crosby Orchestra, along with its combo side group, the Bob Cats, was considered one of the greatest jazz bands of all time.
The band's rhythm section was led by drummer Ray Bauduc and bassist Bob Haggart.
The two-beat Dixieland style they aggressively played was considered old-fashioned by many of the young hipsters who flocked around Goodman, but those worldly enough to appreciate them recognized the immense talent the band possessed and the fantastic music it produced.

Bob Crosby - Free Music Downloads, Videos, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
To Crosby's credit, he seemed aware of his predicament and not uncomfortable at allocating most of the solo space to his talented sidemen, featuring them with his big band and his Bobcats, the latter a hot Dixieland band taken out of his orchestra.
The orchestra broke up in late 1942, Crosby served in the Marines during 1944-1945, and then spent the rest of his life in a variety of activities, often bringing back versions of the Bobcats for special concerts and recordings, taking an occasional vocal but mostly letting his sidemen play.
An okay singer, Crosby was much more important as the leader of a memorable swing band that found its own style by looking backwards to the 1920s.

Most of the Crosby musicians had worked in the dance band led by Ben Pollack.
When Pollack began to neglect the band in favor of an actress his musicians dumped the band's library on Pollack's doorstep and went off to form a band dedicated to recreating classic jazz rather than dance music.
The band took its music from the classic jazz repertoire of the Twenties.

Popular Music and Society: Going Places Doing Things
The tunes on this CD were originally recorded by the full Crosby orchestra or the Bob Cats during the first six years that Crosby fronted the co-op organization.
During the Swing Era, when the big bands prospered with an innovative approach to popular music, the Bob Crosby orchestra and the Bob Cats, the "band within the band," successfully reintroduced tunes from the presumably "outdated" jazz age.
The Bob Cats have tightly arranged ensembles with free-flowing improvisational passages, stirring solos, and impeccable rhythmic support from Ed Metz, on piano, Bob Leary, guitar, Carl McVicker, string bass, and Eddie Metz at the drums.

Russell's cameo was also a nice plug for Bob's "Son of Paleface," which had opened shortly before "Bali" and costarred the voluptuous actress.
As a footnote to this six-shooter slant, the genre that easily seems to have inspired the greatest number of film parodies is also, appropriately, considered the most inherently American--the western.
