Blues - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One kind of early 1940s urban blues was the jump blues, a style heavily influenced by big band music and characterized by the use of the guitar in the rhythm section, a jazzy, up-tempo sound, declamatory vocals and the use of the saxophone or other brass instruments.
Blues is a vocal and instrumental music form often based on the twelve-bar chord progression.
Both recorded blues and country can be traced to the 1920s, when the popular record industry developed and created marketing categories called "race music" and "hillbilly music" to sell music by and for blacks and whites respectively.

Blues ballads are also popular in country music.
Among the best known blues ballads are Percy Mayfield's love song in the form of a prayer, "Please Send Me Someone to Love" and Buddy Johnson's "Since I Fell for You", most successfully recorded by Lenny Welch.
Conversely, the blues ballad differs from bluesy pop songs like Harold Arlen's "Blues in the Night" by simpler harmonies and more direct language.

This album contains the original 16 tracks from Ballads and Blues and four bonus tracks from 1957's At the Gate of Horn.
She soon left the musical stage for the burgeoning folk scene in San Francisco, then New York, where she fell in with Seeger and Harry Belafonte, among others.
This glorious re-release of her seminal 1956 album, Sings Ballads and Blues shows just how good and how relevant she was.

 Christopher Ruel's Blues Music Reviews
Blues Live is a solid effort from start to finish delivering high-powered and melody-oriented blues with earth-scorching guitar work the likes of which have not been seen since Sherman left Atlanta for the sea.
Blues Live is high-energy blues featuring blistering fretwork that conquers listeners with a vengeance and blues presence that Gary Moore shares only with Stevie Ray Vaughan.
The real standouts on the CD are the title track "Still Got The Blues" and "All Your Love", the old Otis Rush standard that Gary covers with an unmistakeable vision and drive that are all his own.

ODETTA SINGS BALLADS AND BLUES sounds as remarkable today as it did upon its first release in 1956, as if Paul Robeson, Bessie Smith, and Leadbelly had combined into one voice.
Singing in a pure yet husky, classically trained voice, accompanying herself on simple but never simplistic acoustic guitar, Odetta was a major force in the collegiate folk and blues revival of the '50s.

CD Review of Joey DeFrancesco - Ballads And Blues on Concord @ jazzreview.com
As he has done on previous albums, particularly Singin’ And Swingin’, DeFrancesco ends the CD by singing and ever-so-slightly swinging on “That’s All.” Then, we realize that the only indulgence missing from Ballads And Blues is DeFrancesco’s trumpet playing.
Also in the fun department, Joey DeFrancesco converts the standard, “Home On The Range,” from a clip-clopping recitation of the melody unaltered into a hard swing unimagined by, oh, several thousand artists who previously recorded the song.
Bollenbeck adds the local color to “Home On The Range” with his country twang, as he does on “Basin Street Blues,” on which he creates a deep South acoustic blues guitar feel.
