Encyclopedia4U - Rhythm and blues - Encyclopedia Article
Rhythm and Blues, or R&B, is a musical marketing term introduced in the late 1940s by Billboard magazine to replace the term race music, which was deemed offensive.
It was strongly influenced by jazz and jump music as well as black gospel music, and influenced jazz in return (hard bop was the product of the influence of rhythm and blues, blues, and gospel music on bebop).
In its first manifestation, rhythm and blues was a black version of a predecessor to rock and roll.

New hybrids appeared by each region, but all of the recorded blues from the early 1900s are distinguished by simple, rural acoustic guitars and pianos.
Most blues feature simple, usually three-chord, progressions and have simple structures that are open to endless improvisations, both lyrical and musical.

Therefore, these purists maintain that many melodies with the word "blues" in the title, and which are often spoken of as being the blues, are not the blues because their melodies lack this particular basic blues harmonic construction.
Blues lyrics contain some of the most fantastically penetrating autobiographical and revealing statements in the Western musical tradition.
The principal blues melodies are, in fact, holler cadences, set to a steady beat and thus turned into dance music and confined to a three-verse rhymed stanza of twelve to sixteen bars.

The song structure is simple--much of classic blues is based around a three-chord, 12-bar progression that leaves room for boundless improvisation--and it serves as a foundation for much of today's popular music.
Acoustic country blues, often from the Mississippi Delta, blossomed during the 1920s, while during the '40s the electric guitar took the music in wild new directions (including north to Chicago).
It's a music strongly associated with the American South, where field hollers, spirituals, and folk stories turned into full-fledged songs, with banjo and then guitar and piano as their main accompaniment.

The Real Chicago Blues, an interview with David Grazian
According to these stereotypes, authentic blues clubs are hole-in-the-wall joints with broken front doors and rattling sound systems; they are unbearably smoky and smell as funky as their music sounds.
The blues borrows from traditional and colonial African music, early American folk traditions, and the work songs as well as spirituals sung by black slaves and field hands during the nineteenth century.
Today the Chicago blues audience continues to be mostly white, whereas many black consumers prefer hip-hop and rap, reggae, jazz, and dance music.

 BLUES-L FAQ
Without going into a great deal of technical musical definitions, the Blues is a form of music that grew out of a remembered African tradition merged with European musical formats during the slavery experience of Blacks in America.
Clapton, Vaughan, Winter, etc. are true blues musicians who take the music to new and more relevant places.
Any topic relating to the blues—the music, performers, books, cultural aspects, history, technical music discussions, reviews, opinions, facts—if it relates to the blues, it is appropriate for Blues-L. This is a terrific list: many members have some kind of professional relationship to the music—musicians, producers, authors, radio programmers, etc.

But these same two decades coincidentally marked the time of the greatest development of recorded rural acoustic blues, and hoodoo was a prominent topic addressed in the lyrics to these songs,.
