Blackalicious - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This was followed by a major label contract with MCA Records and the release of the critically acclaimed album Blazing Arrow in 2002.
In late 1997, Solesides became Quannum Projects and in 1999 Blackalicious released the A2G EP, which served as a precursor to their debut full length album, Nia, released the following year.
Gift of Gab (Tim Parker) and Chief Xcel (Xavier Mosley) met at John F. Kennedy High School in 1987 in Sacramento, California and formed the group in the early 1990s and released their first recording, "Swan Lake", on Solesides Records.

Blackalicious then recorded Melodica, released on SoleSides in 1995.
As Xcel prepared their first album, Gab joined DJ Shadow to record "Count and Estimate" as part of Shadow's side of the first SoleSides label 12-inch in late 1992, and released it to underground acclaim.
She gave us the most beautiful 5-page letter on how each of the songs had touched her life, and she made us a little music box - it was a Blackalicious box - and that stays up in the studio to this day.

 Blackalicious: The Craft: Pitchfork Review
Blackalicious' Chief Xcel and Gift of Gab are among the most diligent and reverent technicians in hip-hop, so it feels oddly appropriate that their third album, The Craft, should bear such a workmanlike title.
Painstakingly detail-oriented and lyrically dense, the record is another labor of love that puts as much emphasis on the labor as on the love.
On paper, the extensive use of live drums, guitars, and strings might seem a nod toward creating more conventional songs, but in practice this blend has unquestionably resulted in some of the weirdest tracks of the group's career.

SoleSides Records was the name of the SoleSides Crew's Northern California record company and in 1994, that label released Blackalicious' debut single "Swan Lake." Although not a triple-platinum smash, the single was a small underground hit that fared well among alternative rap audiences.
In April 2002, MCA released Blackalicious' full-length album Blazing Arrow, which boasts guest appearances by artists who range from vocalist Zack de la Rocha (of Rage Against the Machine fame) to the Roots' ?uestlove to veteran soul singer Gil Scott-Heron.

Tower Records - Blazing Arrow - Blackalicious
Blackalicious, Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel are one of the best M.C./D.J. combos since G.U.R.U. and D.J. Premier debuted as Gang Starr over a decade ago.
An impressive array of sophisticated sonic collage elements, hard-grooving funk rhythms, strings, and free-flowing, intelligent raps are at the heart of this complex-yet-organic recording.
Pessimists might suggest that the album's chart placing is due to the impressive array of guest stars, from old-school rap poet Gil Scott-Heron to R&B siren Jaguar Wright and rock-pop fave Ben Harper.

This is one of those classic summer albums that crams in so much sound and so much life that listening to it is like going to a block party, all-day concert and a family reunion all at the same time.
But what makes it a masterpiece is that Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel can hold it together with the directness of their vision of strength and hope: this is unstoppably joyous, a complicated album that feels as natural as sunshine on your forehead.
But this album is also a massive advance on the last one, pushing the limber rhymes and tight beats with more musical innovation.

Paste Magazine :: Review :: Blackalicious - The Craft :: Anti- (Page 1)
Blackalicious is definitely a throwback to rap styles of yore, falling somewhere between A Tribe Called Quest’s suburbia-approved beatnik-hop (both in its lyrical bent toward social conscience and its sculpted, content-laden beats) and the prolix word-trickery of ’90s indie rap.
The implicit danger in speaking “the opposite of what’s hot now” is that no one will listen, but on The Craft, Blackalicious sidesteps this pitfall by maintaining the essence of its increasingly dated style while making small yet vital concessions to modernity.
The follow-up to 2002's Cobblestone Runway is an amazing blend of warm melody and heart-provoking songwriting.

The conscious hip-hop stylings that have often landed Blackalicious with the "Nerd Rap" label don't cease with the release of The Craft.
Their latest release, The Craft, takes the veteran hip-hop duo's penchant for verbose musings and adds a healthy serving of funk, soul, and late '60s rock to produce an album that aligns with this year's best.
Even with a more pronounced musical base, Gab's lyrics still remain the group's centerpiece.
