Most of the band's material was released on Ginn's independent label, SST Records.
Black Flag's music defied categories: Along with being among the earliest punk rock groups to incorporate elements of heavy metal, there were often overt jazz and contemporary classical elements in their sound, especially in Ginn's guitar playing.
The record was to be distributed by now-defunct Unicorn Records, a subsidiary of MCA.

An admirable document of what was happening at the time, the 75-minute Live `84 isn't for the first-time listener, but does to remind us of how important this band was to face of modern punk music.
The sound quality of Live '84 CD isn't lop-notch (the release was originally on cassette only), but it does a good job of conveying the Black Flag live experience.
The chops of the rest of band hold up better under the strain: Ginn opens the set with the epic guitar solo known as "The Process Of Weeding Out" and Stevenson and Roessler ably keep up throughout.

The fact that this CD is from 1994 suggests perhaps that the makers of this CD were trying to capitalize and join the bumper crop of Rollins Band bootlegs in that year.
This CD provides a decent sounding record of a very early Rollins Band peformance at the El Mocambo club in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

SST, the record label, was formed in 1978 when Black Flag guitarist/founder Greg Ginn needed an outlet to release his band's music.
Such a statement may sound corny in this day and age, and the Minutemen were in fact quite a corny band at times, though this is no Sham 69 for-the-kids bogusness, it's a band stating punk as an idea, not a musical style.
The band had been going for two years (originally under the title Panic) and had built up a solid fan base in the LA area, and so spurred on by the DIY spirit of the time, he did what many others like him did: he started his own label and released the Nervous Breakdown 7".

Anyway, as you can see, the set list is great and the band sounds good.

Were Black Flag the ultimate punk rock band?
Greg Ginn deserves a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for sure, Berry, Hendrix, Ginn, I can't even begin to grasp a large majority of his absolutely non-conformist fretwork, a lot of musicians claim to play the music they hear in their heads, Greg's probably one of the few who actually does.

Sister of 45 Grave keyboardist Paul Roessler, Kira joined Black Flag in 1984, just in time to record the album Slip it In.
Kira left the band in 1985, shortly after completing work on the album In My Head.
