He also takes a second stab at the composerÂ’s desk with the repetetive but appropriately-paced “Rhythm of the Blues.” Though FeinsteinÂ’s choices and voices vary widely on this album, it is an impressive departure which looks back with FeinsteinÂ’s typical care and attention while looking forward with promise.
Borrowing from his impressive mental musical archives, Feinstein uses Benny GoodmanÂ’s “Lullaby In Rhythm” to demonstratre the wide array of songs that used similar lyrical themes (including “Lullabye of Birdland,” “Lullabye of Broadway” and “FascinatinÂ’ Rhythm”).
Growing up in the personal attendance of the legendary Ira Gershwin and in the comforting shadow of such standard bearers as Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer and Irving Berlin, Feinstein has partnered his smokey vocals with the fiery horns of the legendary Maynard Fergusion for Big City Rhythms, his 18th album.

Ray later mentioned to me that he had recently recorded a live album in BIRDLAND with Monty Alexander at the piano, who was present in the club that evening.
Ray said that, "the audience always brings so much to a gig and "I've been looking for that woman for years" to be a part of the audience when he records another live album.
Ray's personality and musical expression was also very large, open, laid back, relaxed and full of good fun and appreciative and loving of others, which was so much a part of the special "swing" that he gave to every fast musical number or romantically caressed and communicated slow ballad.

After releasing his debut solo album on Atlantic in 1970, Zawinul and Shorter put together what was to become the most important jazz group of the ‘70s and beyond, Weather Report.
In 1985, after he and Shorter finally agreed to go in separate musical directions, Zawinul continued to create adventurous new grooves in the group known as Weather Update and then the Zawinul Syndicate, whose albums have included the Grammy-nominated My People in 1996 and the two-CD, Grammy-nominated World Tour in 1998.

 Birdland With Lester Bangs
On April Fool's Day (June 23rd), 1979, Lester Bangs entered Electric Lady Studios with JOEY RAMONE'S EXTREMELY TALENTED BROTHER MICKEY LEIGH (see STOP and THE RATTLERS, though not yet because I haven't reviewed them yet) and two other musicians to record this extremely short album called Birdland With Lester Bangs.
Though it wouldn't be the only album Lester would record in his short life (the other was called Jook Savages On The Brazos), it would be the only one that I've ever heard, so here's my review:
Sure, it probably breaks no new ground, but in their chosen genre (garage punk updated for speed freaks?), these guys could have been Kings.
