Big Black - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Big Black was one of the most influential noise rock bands of the 1980s.
The Lungs EP, the first effort to appear under the Big Black name, was used primarily to recruit members to fill out the band, and was released by Ruthless Records.
The record is famous for the variety of inserts, which included a lyric sheet in most copies, plus extras like condoms, dollar bills, stickers, concert tickets, photographs, silverware, razor blades, bloody bandages, and squirtguns.

 TrouserPress.com :: Big Black
The Big Black catalogue was consolidated and reissued in late '92, augmented by the release of Pigpile, a live album recorded in London during the quartet's 1987 farewell tour.
Big Black made music that was grating, angular, humorless and very intelligent — sort of a cross between Gang of Four, PiL and the Great Crusades (not a band).
As Big Black was splitting up, they released their finest work: a second actual LP, Songs About Fucking.

 Big Black Info
Anthony Wheaton accompanies Big Black's hand percussion with admirable dexterity and charisma; his performance is strongly influenced by classical music, as phrases from classical repertoires appear and disappear at regular intervals (this is especially evident in the lighthearted and classically informed track "Jigs").
Ethnic Fusion is a reissue of an LP released on 1750 Arch Records in 1982.
Black, of course, is the dominant sound on this disc, as he has been on many before it.

Delusions of Adequacy Reviews - The Black Keys
Even while paving their own musical path, the Black Keys have a distinctly retro sound, and the album is complete with little hisses and such caught in the recording.
The Big Come Up, the first album by this two-piece powerhouse from Akron, Ohio, could be the best blues album in years.
This is the kind of album that will stand the test of time so well you'll be listening to it 20 or 30 years from now and it will still sound superb.

Big Black Touch and Go/Quarterstick Records
Lungs, the first Big Black release, was recorded by Steve in 1982 on a borrowed four track.
In 1992, Touch And Go released a Big Black live album and video, titled Pig Pile, that were recorded (mostly) in 1987 during Big Black’s final tour.
Shortly after those releases, freed from their Homestead deal, Big Black came to Touch and Go and recorded the Headache EP and Heartbeat 7” in the summer of 1986.

They are not necessarily inspired by Big Black, they are inspired by the climate of music that was generated during the period that Big Black was active.
I don't pretend to be an equal participant in the music, I am a technician and the band are responsible for their music, in that respect I don't feel any obligation to pretend to be enthusiastic and like the band.

Tarentel: Paper White EP / Big Black Square EP: Pitchfork Review
Big Black Square is a single that the band simultaneously released with Paper White, an EP of leftover minimalist improvisations from the We Move Through Weather sessions.
While Big Black seems to soundtrack a fever dream for someone whose worldview is seen through a lifted Venetian blind, Paper is essentially about liberation and the puzzlement of what to do next.
Big saunters time away as the sound titillates anticipation of events that never happen-- a laryngitis-stricken guitar amp does most of the talking.

 CD Times - Big Black
Big Black started out as an Albini solo project, recording bass, guitar and vocals over a backing provided by a Roland TR-606 drum machine onto a 4-track he'd got his hands on after swapping a case of beer for it.
With a sound nor far from an industrial accident at a steel mill, Big Black were aggressive, punishing and had an uncompromising attitude towards their music.
With each of the early Big Black releases being EP-length and issued only on vinyl, it wasn't until their debut album, 1985's Atomizer that Big Black started to pick up any attention either nationally or abroad.

After a whirlwind tour stretching from the Chicago to Evanston (and back!), they recorded their first EP together, but with Pat Byrne on drums, rather than the familiar Roland.

The History of Rock Music. Steve Albini: history, discography, reviews, links
For anyone who had forgotten the abrasive, catostrophic sound of Big Black, the true progenitors of today's noise-rock, all it will take is the dissonant guitar attack of My Black Ass to put you back in your place.
It's this passage that removes the last doubts: Albini's new sound is far from the claustrophobic atmospheres of Big Black and Rapeman.
Borrowing from Killing Joke's cadaveric dirges, from the Pop Group's syncopated spasms, from Suicide's psychotic rituals, from Red Krayola's demented psychedelia, Albini consistently approached rock music as a victim to be vivisected, mangled, corroded with muriatic acid and nailed to the cross.

Big Black Bus is a cassette by Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids, recorded and released promotionally in summer, 1990.
Side B of this cassette contains messages left by fans of the band on the answering machine which operated as the "Marilyn Manson Family Intervention Hotline" until the mid-1990s.
The front cover featured a clip art image of school bus, altered to include the text HOLY WOOD PROD., a reference to the "Big Black Bus" which transported the Manson Family in the 1960s.

I remember sitting in the kitchen of my Dad's house in Connecticut listening to him make fun of the Shaft music.
