It is an incredibly dismissive session, just Van on acoustic guitar and vocals, the music virtually interchangeable from one "song" to the next, the lyrics alternating nonsense lines with pointed jabs, barbs and in-jokes.

Bert recorded this song already on Solomon Burke in '62, but Freddie's approach is closer to Betty Harris "63 slow version.
The song starts quietly, almost in a whisper, but then grows and grows and keeps on growing to an unsurpassable deep soul climax and to such an intense that in my books this record is my all-time number three.
It's also the only 'fresh' album in the Shout discography as the only other album release, In the Beginning ('72), offered some early Jimi Hendix' mid-60s recordings.

You hear strange, astonishingly delicate bits of instrumentation -- guitar triplets, a hesitating piano, room to breathe all through the arrangements -- that produce the feeling that the great voices Berns recorded were not quite of this earth.

If you think you've not heard of Bert Berns, you've certainly heard his work – from the Beatles' (and Isley Brothers') hit "Twist and Shout" to Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart," to "Hang on Sloopy" and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," Berns was one of the great unknown songwriters of the 1960s.
From the shoutin' gospel of Sister Rosetta Tharpe to 1960s pop craftsman Bert Berns to a blues take on pop star Van Morrison's songs, these albums recapture some of the last century's musical brilliance.
Like Otis Blackwell and Doc Pomus, Berns provided much of the soundtrack to the '60s – but never got the kind of attention that the Leiber-Stoller songwriter team did.

I loved the song then, but a couple of years later, when I heard – in the Hayward garage of late Baytown Records owner Mark Edmunds – the Berns-produced 1967 original sung by Aretha Franklin's sister Erma, my world changed.
