Ambrose (bandleader) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ambrose stayed at the May Fair for six years, during which time the band made recordings for Brunswick Records, HMV, and Decca Records.
In the mid-1950s, despite appearances back in London's West End and a number of recordings for Decca, Ambrose was – in common with other bandleaders – struggling; rock and roll had arrived.
His situation was saved, however, by his discovery of the singer Kathy Kirby (whome he heard singing at the age of sixteen at the Ilford Palais), and whose career he promoted.

Bert Ambrose was born in London, England, in 1897 and as a young man emigrated to USA where he studied the violin.
Ambrose was not considered the top band by HMV who were also releasing very popular recordings by Jack Hylton, Paul Whiteman and others.
Late in 1932 Ambrose appeared on the Regal-Zonophone label then in 1933 the band returned to the Brunswick label and also to the Embassy Club, Sid Phillips joined the band as reed player and arranger, and then in 1934 Ambrose recordings appeared again on the now parent blue label Decca, and this continued until 1947.

Ambrose was one of the top bands overseas in the late 20's and eary 30's, in fact British dance bands durung that era were hotter then most American dance bands like Paul Whiteman, and Guy Lombardo which played mostly "sweet" music.
The jazz content of this cd is not as high as one would wish, however Ambrose had a good and at times even swinging big band.
I don't listen to this cd all the time, but I'm REALLY glad it's in my collection.

Ambrose started recording in 1923, but his records were not distinguishable from others of that period.
Throughout the country there were literally thousands of bands, largely semi-professional, but a large number were fully-professional and twenty or so, London-based, were household names, their broadcasts a must for radio listeners and their records sold in millions.
Avid Records has just released a compilation of Ambrose recordings, Swing Is In The Air (AMSC690), which includes many of the jazz oriented recordings, with the Sid Phillips composition and arrangement, Cotton Pickers' Congregation, a great jazz recording by any standard, its concept, arrangement and performance quite extraordinary for a British band.

Having waxed a handful of phonograph recordings for Columbia in April of 1923, Ambrose began to attract attention a bit later on with titles like "Take Your Finger Out of Your Mouth," recorded for the English Brunswick label in 1927, and "Singapore Sorrows," recorded in April of 1928 for His Master's Voice.

It is likely that few people had heard of the band; Luigi did not allow broadcasting from the club, so, in comparison to the Savoy Havana Band, who were broadcasting regularly, the band was not such a good recording proposition, and Columbia did not repeat the experiment.
It is not surprising that many were used by some record company's musical directors to form the core of their studio bands.
His musical background is rather a mystery, though he was playing the violin at a very young age.

Ambrose’s recording career at this time was still meagre, although throughout 1929 the band made some interesting records for Decca that unfortunately were marred by poor recording technology.
Ambrose’s recording contract with Decca gave him much greater freedom over choice of music to be recorded than he had previously enjoyed.
It was because the Ambrose band achieved such a remarkable degree of authenticity and perfection in each of the several styles that dance music then encompassed, that it was held in such high esteem.

For, like the orchestras of Ambrose and Stone, the Casa Loma, who recorded hundreds of titles, also had to cater for hotel audiences, who were not usually very discerning from a musical point of view.
In 1929 a dispute arose between the management of the Mayfair Hotel and the BBC, which resulted in British radio listeners being deprived of broadcasts by the Ambrose Orchestra, but by 1930 it was back on the air in augmented form.
But, I think, the one that was probably most influential in the style at that time was the Casa Loma Orchestra, the music director of which was Glen Gray.
