Benny Golson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Golson was working with the Lionel Hampton band at the Apollo Theater in Harlem in 1956 when he learned that Clifford Brown, a noted and well-liked jazz trumpeter who had done a stint with him in Hampton's band, had died in a car accident.
Golson made an important cameo appearance in the 2004 movie, The Terminal.
During the mid-1970s Golson returned to jazz playing and recording.

 Benny Golson Biography
For a man as dedicated to and in love with music as Benny Golson, it was, of course, only a matter of time before he broke his exclusive engagement with composition and returned to the stage.
Born in Philadelphia in 1929, Golson's first instrument was the piano.
That edition of the Messengers, with Golson as musical director, is regarded by many, including Blakey himself, as the best in the 46-year history of the group, producing what is widely considered the best album the Messengers ever made: "Moanin", recorded for Blue Note on October 30th, 1958.

GOLSON, Benny : MusicWeb Encyclopaedia of Popular Music
Golson suggested Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, Jymie Merritt on bass (all from Philadelphia); the band transformed, Golson wrote tunes and inspired the others, seeing that original material would give the band an identity; he cajoled Timmons into developing a funky fragment that became 'Moanin' '.

Golson began to counsel Blakey on a wide range of matters, business-related as well as musical.
His use of harmony to support the melody is so great, and the songs that he writes are such a pleasure to improvise upon.

Billy Taylor's Jazz Guest Artist: Benny Golson
In addition to being a superb tenor saxophonist with a unique dark and burly tone, Benny Golson has graced the music with a number of memorable tunes, including "Killer Joe," "Whisper Not," and "Along Came Betty," to cite but three of his classic contributions.
Taylor draws cogent commentary from Benny about compositional structure and how he organizes the various elements of a tune.
Later an audience member asks Benny whether the people he writes about, such as "Killer Joe" and "Along Came Betty," are actually real people.

Golson's deep and lyrical tenor dips into some of his best-known hard-bop gems, like in-the-pocket classics "Killer Joe" and "Blues March," and he comes up with some new delights such as the calypso-cadenced "Caribbean Drifting." The title track, with its oblique and urbane melody, is of course inspired by the movie.
Here, Golson is backed by a powerhouse combo featuring trumpeter Eddie Henderson, pianist Mike LeDonne, bassist Buster Williams, and drummer Carl Allen.
Title track is from Golson's playing in the Spielberg/Tom Hanks movie of the same name.

His robust playing added extra kick to the band, and his solo on Bobby Timmons' song "Moanin'" is a classic.

When Benny Golson returned to active playing in 1977, his tone had hardened and sounded much closer to Archie Shepp than to Don Byas.

Meet The Jazztet: The Hard Bop Homepage
From the first notes of "Serenata" (transformed into 6/8 for the melody statement), it is apparent that Benny Golson's voicings gave The Jazztet its own personality.
In contrast, the melody of the Al Jolson standard "Avalon" is not even hinted at until its final chorus which is preceded by torrid two-chorus solos from an already recognizable Tyner, Fuller and Golson (who really tears up the chord changes).
To close Meet The Jazztet, there is the initial (and arguably best) recorded version of "Killer Joe," complete with a spoken introduction from its composer.

Review: Benny Golson's Funky Quintet featuring Nat Adderly 'That's Funky'
The album opens with a sweet version of Kurt Weill's "Mack The Knife" that is true to jazz standard, but just funky enough to raise the eyebrows of Sex Mob fans.
Although a group of penguins farting out this chart would probably sound good enough to swing to, this is the weakest, most stagey track on "That's Funky." I attribute this to a rushed tempo, and perhaps the fact that Golson and Adderly may be a little burnt out on this one by now.
With five familiar covers and one snappy blues number, That's Funky is enjoyable head-boppin' music that only an asshole wouldn't like.

I have a vivid memory of a Benny Golson band, looking like a bunch of off-duty New York traffic cops, playing the Bracknell Jazz Festival around 20 years ago, and getting a group of uninterested Bracknell punks pogoing happily up and down in front of the stage.
He could have staked a reputation on his robust but smokily tender sax sound alone, but Golson is a great writer of jazz themes, with I Remember Clifford, the Art Blakey signature Blues March and the stalking, rhythmically relentless Killer Joe (which became an acid-jazz anthem) among many classics to his credit.
This is a well-played but faintly bland exercise by Golson's high standards, and serious admirers will want to search out the 7-CD Mosaic set of his early work with the Jazztet, out soon.
