CD Review of Ben Webster - Soulville on Verve @ jazzreview.com
Ben Webster’s Soulville is notable for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that he is backed up with Oscar Peterson’s trio, plus Stan Levey on drums.
Another notable aspect of Soulville is that Webster, forever known as one of the greatest jazz saxophonists, plays piano on the last three tracks.
Indeed, Webster seems to lose the thread of the melody several times, stopping and starting over again in the space of a single measure.

1201 Music Presents Webster, Ben - There Is No Greater Love
Ben fashions beautifully lyrical solos on songs such as I Got It Bad and What’s New, investing each with soft outlines in which the notes merge together like water colours coagulating on wet paper.
But perhaps the greatest single track on this collection and one of the best performances Ben taped in latter years - is the lovely Autumn Leaves which jogs along at thirty bars per minute and is therefore outside the “ballad tempo” class.
He even combed his grandmother’s hair!” Since he became domiciled in Europe the gentler side of his personality dominated his playing and when Alan Bates recorded this album in Copenhagen these balland tracks manifest an almost indecent amount of emotion and pure romanticism.

Webster said Peterson was his all-time best accompanist; as for Oscar, he payed his tribute to Ben by citing his famous Cottontail solo (with Ellington) here and there, for instance on "Tribute To My Friends" (1983).
In my opinion Ben Webster´s best recordings are those made with Oscar Peterson in the late 50´s ("B.W. Meets O.P.", "Soulville").
On "Soulville" there is a beautiful paraphrase of Sinatra´s recording a month earlier, "Where Are You"; "B.W. Meets" has an even more etheric version of "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning", which I strongly recommend.

After leaving Ellington, he led a small group for club and record dates and also played with several small groups led by artists such as Stuff Smith and Red Allen.
One of the acknowledged masters of the tenor saxophone, Webster made innumerable records, few of them below the highest of standards.
